Publisher's Summary

A compelling look at animal welfare and factory farming in the United States from Mercy for Animals, the leading international force in preventing cruelty to farmed animals and promoting compassionate food choices and policies.

Nathan Runkle would have been a fifth-generation farmer in his small Midwestern town. Instead, he founded our nation's leading nonprofit organization for protecting factory farmed animals. In Mercy for Animals, Nathan brings us into the trenches of his organization's work; from MFA's early days in grassroots activism, to dangerous and dramatic experiences doing undercover investigations, to the organization's current large-scale efforts at making sweeping legislative change to protect factory farmed animals and encourage compassionate food choices.

But this isn't just Nathan's story. Mercy for Animals examines how our country moved from a network of small, local farms with more than 50 percent of Americans involved in agriculture to a massive coast-to-coast industrial complex controlled by a mere one percent of our population - and the consequences of this drastic change on animals as well as our global and local environments. We also learn how MFA strives to protect farmed animals in behind-the-scenes negotiations with companies like Nestlé and other brand names - conglomerates whose policy changes can save countless lives and strengthen our planet. Alongside this unflinching snapshot of our current food system, listeners are also offered hope and solutions - big and small - for ending mistreatment of factory farmed animals. From simple diet modifications to a clear explanation of how to contact corporations and legislators efficiently, Mercy for Animals proves that you don't have to be a hardcore vegan or an animal-rights activist to make a powerful difference in the lives of animals.

Powerful, emotional and inspiring

Author Nathan Runkle could have easily and rightfully made this book entirely about himself, but instead it (in my opinion) functioned more as a way of honoring the incredible and selfless undercover investigators who bring light to the most abused in our society. The book beautiful weaves personal stories of Runkle’s with the mission and successes of his organization without feeling like a commercial for MFA, which to me speaks to the honesty of Runkle’s true motivation.

Mercy For Animals; The Key To Human Evolution and Our Most Urgent Climate Change Solution

Mercy For Animals is one of the most important books of our day, revealing the horrific brutality of the sick and inhumane animal industries. Our species has been indoctrinated from birth to eat innocent, intelligent, sensitive, conscious creatures. We are being brainwashed and marketed to, from such an early age, that we are blind to the brutality at the foundation of our lives that support, unconsciously, outmoded, unnecessary, industrial factory farms and their animal products. Parents must awaken to the fact that McDonald's Happy Meals are the furthest thing from happy!

Humanity must face the truth that each year, over 8 billion farmed animals are raised from birth to slaughter in nightmarish and torturous conditions, not only for the animals, but for the poor factory workers as well, those who suffer and quickly become desensitized to the death and brutality of this tragedy that becomes the very food we eat. Until we, as individuals and our collective humanity say, "Enough is enough!" the powerful meat and dairy industries will profit from the suffering of humans and creatures, living, breathing animals that have as much right to their lives as we do. Humanity must become humane. With industrial factory farming being one of the greatest contributors to global warming, humanity must awaken now. There is no time to delay the end to our reliance on suffering animals and their products.

One of the most critical realities in facing the issues and our unconscious animal cruelty is the tremendous negative impact eating animals is having towards contributing to climate change. The billions of animals that are being eaten are creating animal waste on a monumental scale. This waste is polluting water, as well as fouling the air and the earth. Rainforests, the lungs of our planet, are disappearing at an alarming rate, all for profits for outmoded animal industries.

There are so many reasons to end our dependence on eating animals and their products, which are so clearly and compassionately touched upon in this book. Anyone who cares about their health, the health of their families and the urgent need to care for the health of our beloved Earth, must read this book.

The story of what led Nathan Runkle to create the awesome Mercy For Animals organization is a story of inspiration, as well as a testimony to the power of one person, who not only cares so deeply for the welfare of animals, but Nathan shows us that with courage, determination and collaboration there's so much good we humans can do to initiate positive and lasting change.

People must wake up to the horrors of how we are contributing to so much suffering and choose to participate in the ground swell of those shifting to a plant based, vegan diet. We can, in every choice we make daily, eat with awareness and compassion, knowing that as more wonderful, tasty, healthy, plant based foods are coming to the marketplaces, that we are supporting the most important revolution of our generation. We support ending the suffering of countless numbers of innocent creatures and in turn, we transform our lives and most importantly, as parents, we teach our children to love and care for our planet on an unprecedented scale, in the history of our species on this, our most precious, fragile, planet Earth.

A truly heartbreaking, yet inspiring book.

I am not sure I ever finished a book this fast before! I cannot recommend this enough to all of you. We must all wake up and realize the abuse that this society inflicts upon non-human animals. We must work together to create a more compassionate future, and the first step of that is educating ourselves on the current situation.. and this book is the perfect first step.

Sad but so good

This book was so eye opening to the cruelty that goes on in the farming industry. Anyone who wants to eat animals should have to read this book and truly understand the suffering that goes into their cheeseburger.
