In ferner Vergangenheit beauftragten die geheimnisvollen Bewohner des Planeten Mechanica, der im Leerraum zwischen den Galaxien steht, von ihnen gebaute Roboter mit der Lösung ihrer Ernährungsprobleme. Danach verschwanden die Erbauer, aber ihre seltsame Robotflotte ist noch immer damit beschäftigt, Planeten auszukundschaften, auf denen sie ihre Saat des Verderbens ausbreiten können, um später die Ernte einzubringen. Perry Rhodan und Atlan, die berühmten Vertreter der großen Sternenreiche Terra und Arkon, werden auf den Plan gerufen, als die fremden Roboter ihre Saat eines Tages auf Arkon II abladen. Damit nicht genug, müssen sich die Freunde mit einer Untergrundorganisation auseinandersetzen, der es gelingt, den Robotregenten von Arkon umzuprogrammieren. Die unmittelbare Folge ist, daß Atlan als Imperator abgesetzt wird und ein anderer an seine Stelle tritt.
