Publisher's Summary
In the newest Argeneau novel from New York Times best-selling author Lynsay Sands, an immortal barely escapes a raging fire only to kindle a sizzling passion with his potential life mate.
Mac Argeneau knows all too well: Immortals can be killed. Not with holy water or silver crosses, but by decapitation or being set on fire. So when Mac’s house bursts into flames - with him inside - he’s sure it was no accident. But who would want to kill a scientist specializing in hematology? There is a silver lining: A blonde investigator appears on the scene and sparks feelings in him that have been dormant for centuries.
CJ Cummings is in town on a special investigation, but she’s been waylaid by the local police to deal with this arson case. The biggest mystery is how this sexy scientist with silvery blue eyes has emerged from a blazing inferno without a burn mark on him. He’s clearly hiding something. Sure, she’d love to see him without his lab coat, but she’s got a job to do - despite his insistence that he needs a bodyguard and...he wants her.
But when a second attempt on their lives puts CJ in harm’s way, it’s Mac who will do anything to safeguard the woman who’s destined to be his life mate.

Disappointed
I have every audible and e-book in this series. I always buy them when they 1st come out. Luckily this time I bought the Audible book 1st & I won’t be wasting my money on the e-book. I have several reasons but here are my top 3.
1st I don’t read this series to validate my “wokeness” on today’s hot news topics. This is supposed to be Vampire fiction...fantasy....escapism.
2nd the female character (life-mate) to Max upon her 1st orgasm in the dream state expresses her pleasure by making a sound described as “Ululated or(ing)”Sands uses this this description more than once. After the 2nd time I started fast forwarding because it just ruined it. Because honestly I don’t understand why Max didn’t walk away after the 1st time & say ok I’m good I can wait another 1000 yrs for a life mate that doesn’t “ howl like a dog & wolf, screech & hoot like an owl or alternate between two high pitched sounds rapidly”.
Finally, we get this huge back story on the female character, but Max just drops in from no where. I mean I know who he’s related to, but has he been in a lab for 1000 years?
Did Sands even write all this? 🤦🏼♀️

Ugh...the narration
There's so much potential here. I was excited to hear more of the Port Henry group, but that doesn't happen. Other characters drop in, but the narrator missed the mark on adding any accents or differences between the characters and says Notte wrong. Bricker can be so funny, Marguerite is usually so endearing, and Julius is so protective and yet I just didn't feel it in this book. They are there, but just kind of. Bricker got the closest, but the comic relief he usually adds was minimal. I'm trying to decide if it was the narration or the story. I would have loved to know more about Mac. It won't stop me from getting the next book in a couple of months, but this won't be one I listen to again and again like I do with some of the others.

Narrator was good, but not for this series
No-tay. Continuity issues aside, it was good. It was a nice change to skip the "turning" scene. Honestly, I have gotten to the point of fast forwarding those bits in recent books.

Solid Addition
I thought this 32nd Installment of the Argeneau series was a solid addition. I enjoyed the story - and I like it when she focus's on topics that aren't as high in the public's awareness, like the one she tackles here. I sympathize with CJ's story - but then again - I know what happened to her actually DOES happen in real life - even good, church going, faithful partners/spouses. Sadly. Though, I do agree with the folks pointing out that Macon could have done with a little more of an introduction to the Argeneau readers than he got. I honestly don't remember him being mentioned before, even in the short story about Teddy and Katricia - apologies if he was. As a fan of hers since the first Argeneau book was released in 2009, I have to admire anyone that can write 32 novels along a specific storyline, centered around a specific set of characters in a relatively small "universe." Also to those that are perhaps new to the series that are complaining about the diversity of character types in this book (i.e. "social justice" topics) -- Ummmm Ms. Sands has always been inclusive and accepting of ALL types of personalities, experiences and, yes social issues in this series of books. So what?? They are her books and her stories - she can tell them any way she and her publisher agree is best. The "Anti-SJW" stuff is soooooo 10 years ago - get over yourselves. The whole commenting on stuff like this crying about an "SJW" message is actually getting boring. The world is looking at you in it's review mirror.

It was good... but not great.
I love this series so was really excited to listen to it but at the end all I thought was "that's it". There are other books in the series that I've listened to more times than I can count but I don't think I will be listening to this one again. Fingers crossed I won't be disappointed with the next one. I am really looking forward to Jet's story 😊

Well...
Setting: Sanford, Ontario, Canada Contemporary
Genre: paranormal romance
While setting up his lab in his new rental, Macon “Mac” Argeneau smelled smoke and discovered that he was trapped by fire. Well as everyone familiar with this series knows, there are only two ways to kill a Immortal (AKA vampire), and fire is the surest. Luckily he was able to alert the firefighters that he was there, and they managed to pull him out of the tub full of water he’d been hiding in.
CJ Cummings is with the Special Investigations Unit, a civilian agency in charge of investigating instances of police misconduct. She is in Sanford to interview the people involved in accusations against a local police officer. When she gets to the station for her appointment, she gets roped into assisting with looking over the arson crime scene. She is surprised that the fire victim is not dead, and he is surprised that he can’t read her. This, of course, means that since she isn’t psychotic, they are life mates. Mac manages to talk her into being his body guard.
The story is mostly a whodunnit regarding the arson, and the investigation into the local police officer, spiced up with a couple of murder attempts. Also Mac hiding his true nature from CJ, and her angst related to her past.
This is the least Lynsay Sands sounding book I’ve ever listened to. At times it sounded almost like fan fiction. So much seemed to be missing. There weren’t the usual emotional highs and lows, the shock on the mortal’s part on learning about vampires. The characters weren’t well developed. There was no real tension. The climax was kind of out of left field, and the denouement was just...meh.
The narration by Stacey Glemboski was pretty fair. She didn’t have a huge range, but it was easy to tell characters apart. I wouldn’t reject future narrations by her.
Overall, this is average, so actually pretty good. Not the worst in the series. If you’re an Argeneau fan, you’ll want to add this to your library — I did, and would have even if I’d read a review just like this one.

GREAT DEEP & HUMOROUS
Another Great Agenreau Episode.
Here We've got Macon 'Mac' Agenreau the Sister of Katricia Agenreau Brunswick officer in Port Henry whom we met in earlier episodes.
He'd ONLY JUST moved to Sandford a small rural town, then a fire had started on the outside of his home whilst he was starting to unpack his Scientific Equipment, so his life was nearly done for.
And it's at this time when SIU (Spacial Investigation Unit) officer CJ Cummings from Pelee Island came to town & is put to work with Captain Dupree to hopefully interview her suspect Patrol Officer Jefferson.
But things don't go as smoothly as she was expecting, especially when 4 of Mac's family members Enforcers Bricker & Deckercame along with his Aunt Marguerite & Uncle Julius whom CJ had met before.
And this where things start heating up for Mac & CJ and they start to learn the truth, especially after the attempted rundown, but it's not until they take CJ home to Peele Island
