Publisher's Summary

Matt and Liz may have retired from the police, but that doesn't mean a quiet life.

An old friend's sister disappears without a trace. There's no sign of foul play, but she'd been acting very peculiarly....

Meanwhile, Liz's cousin, Christie, comes to stay. She takes an immediate - and uncharacteristic - dislike to the local bookshop owner, Gina. Why does everyone put up with her awful behavior?

Hunting will-o'-the-wisps on the marshes can be a very dangerous hobby.

Christie is convinced that Gina is manipulating everyone around her. Is she onto something dangerous or just pushing her new friends away?

No one believes her suspicions until another friend goes missing late at night on the misty Fen marshes.

Can Matt and Liz uncover the truth in time to save lives?

Different from others in the series...

I have loved all Joy Ellis's books in all her series, and the research that must've gone into this was was amazing; hours and hours of research no doubt! However despite the narrator having a wonderful rich voice, I found it a bit too dramatic at times. I was also a little disappointed in the ending, I would have liked a bit more drama after all the lead up, and without giving anything away there was one aspect of the story that I felt wasn't tied up as neatly as I would have thought it would be...and I think maybe also it leaves an opening for Matt and Liz to come back...let's hope so! 😃👍

Not a psychological thriller

More a predictable romance. Davies is no Richard Armitage. Disappointed all round, couldn’t get through it

Dull dull dull

What a disappointment this was.
Such a beige writer. The story might be good but the writing was awful

not a procedural

Unlike other books by this author, this isn't a procedural. It's mostly about the cousin of Liz and the friends she makes. But as another reader commented, the plot is flimsy and not likely and there's no attempt to make it believable.

I wanted to like Christie, but any other poison would have walked away and left these people alone. They didn't do anything to instill that kind of loyalty on short notice. they were a nuisance and the death of one was so ridiculous. there was no reason for her to walk into her death except the plot demanded that someone die.

if you like books about manipulative women and liars, this is for you. there's a ton of that and a lot of Christie wrestling internal with what to do. if you were looking for a piece procedural like her other books, you might not enjoy this one. there's little detective work in here and not much common sense either.

there's no twists. no surprises. everything is spelled out into advance. I kept hoping the story would get better or Matt and Liz would do something since the book is supposed to be about them, but nope. it's all about Christie.

Joy Ellis delivers again

My only concern with these audiobooks is that people expect me to go to work rather than sit at home listening to them.

Joy Ellis is fab!

Unfortunately though the narration and actor decided on a southern country accent which for me first of all confused me and eventually irritated. It was set in Lincolnshire! Not Dorset, Devon, Cornwall or Gloucestershire!

A very good story

I don't usually go for psychological stories but this one has me hooked from the start. The end of the main story is a great twist. Not sure about the last bit of stories of death on the marshes seems irrelevant. This is extremely well read.

Was this intended as a parody?

I hesitate to review this book, worried as I am that I’ve made the mistake of not realising that the author intended it as a parody of the genre. I kept thinking that the silliness would be halted at some point, veil torn aside and the real story brought into the light of day. No such luck. This is the unlikeliest of tales. The motivation of the evil mastermind the flimsiest … surely this is a joke? Avoid this foolishness.
