About this listen

Matt and Liz may have retired from the police, but that doesn't guarantee a quiet life.

A deserted building. A face in the window. A face that shouldn't be there.

Photography student Toby Unsworth has found the location for the perfect night-time shoot. A cobbled street in the old part of Fenfleet. Later, when he looks at the images on his laptop, he thinks he sees a woman's face in the window of an old, disused building. He asks his housemate Alex to come and take a look . . .

Two days later, Toby and Alex are dead. Carbon monoxide poisoning. An unfortunate accident. But Alex's mother doesn't believe it. She hires Matt and Liz to find out the truth.

Meanwhile, nine-year-old Simon is missing. He was staying with his Aunt Jessie in a cottage on the edge of the marsh. And his older sister Kellie is increasingly worried.

Matt and Liz's investigations reveal that something very big and very dangerous has descended on the small market town of Fenfleet. And if they don't get to the bottom of it, more deaths will follow.

I have listened to all this series but honestly can't remember feeling so irritated by the voice! Another reviewer said it perfectly about how annoying it was, I could only think of the word "pompous" 😅 but yes so over the top and cringey 😖 and just not suited for this type of book...

Good story spoilt by narrator 😒

Excellent story, Matthew Lloyd Davies as the narrator was the appropriate person to read “Trick of the Night”.

Excellent Narrator

Loved it all but I love everything that Joy Ellis writes, she just has the "truth" knack

The twists

I enjoyed listening to this one, just as much as all the rest, Of Joy Ellis books, Although at times Mathew Lloyd Davies did sound a little pompous at times, did a great job, and I look forward to hearing more from this Author,

I really liked listening to this book. Loved the twists and turns and loved the narrators voice. Couldn’t put it down once I was into the story.

Another great J. Ellis’ masterpiece

This is the best in this series so far, and much more enjoyable than the last 2. Far more like the writings of Joy Elliis that i have come to love and I am looking forward to the next one

Enjoyed

Having read over twenty of Joy Ellis’s books it was a pretty safe bet that this would be an excellent read. As usual, lots of twists and turns and connections I didn’t expect but as all good detective stories, it kept me guessing. Having been brought up not far from the where the book is set, I thought some of the accents were a little over done but it didn’t spoil the listen.

Another cracking yarn from Joy

The Ballard series aren’t nearly as enjoyable compared with the the 2 earlier complete series of books being the DI Jackman & DI Galena.

Great story
