Ricorda ancora la rabbia che aveva letto sul volto suo padre quando Fumal Senior aveva cercato di corromperlo. Ma quando Palla di lardo viene trovato cadavere il fastidio si trasforma in senso di colpa. Per la prima volta in vita sua Maigret sente di aver preso un granchio.
