La luna doveva essere già sorta dietro la nebbia, che ora aveva una leggera luminescenza. Quando Arlette si voltò, Maigret vide la macchia chiara del suo viso e il tratto deciso, sanguigno, della bocca...Sempre immobile davanti a lui, la giovane donna aggiunse allora con una voce diversa, che faceva male sentire:
«E... non vuole approfittarne, come gli altri?».
Maigret provò l'impulso di fare con Arlette quello che lei aveva fatto con la madre: schiaffeggiarla come una bambina perversa. Si limitò a stringerle un braccio con forza e a spingerla verso la discesa.
