Publisher's Summary

What would you do if you knew a child who was being abused? If that child was a member of your family? Would you call the authorities and have the child taken away, or would you turn a blind eye?

These are the kind of questions that Lost in Thought provokes. The author, who lived through the atrocities mentioned in this audiobook, paints a vivid if disturbing image of child abuse and how it affects the psyche as one grows older. What begins as abuse leads quickly to suicidal thoughts and loss of control.

Lost in Thought is the unbelievable true story of a child who was in this predicament. His mother, who was hooked on prescription pills, sexually abused him for years and convinced him that nothing was out of the ordinary. Family members knew of the horrifying situation yet did nothing to stop it. He distanced himself from his family as he grew older only to become more of an outcast.

This is the powerful true story of a man who was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome on the autism spectrum in his mid-20s, overcame adversity, and took back control of his life before it was too late.

A sad story of a resilient man

It''s so sad and disturbing to know that parents treat their own child in such a disgusting way. it kinda of reminds me of Dave Pezlers' "A Child Called IT". if you are a victim of abuse or have been around it, it may cause some triggers, but it's a good story to show the mental breakdown if the victims of abuse.
I am so happy that the author was able to break away from his family and get away from the abuse. I think that if more people share their stories, then the victim stigma would diminish some.

A very heartbreaking narrative

The subject matter of this book is truly heartbreaking. I feel so sad for the author. Sexual abuse should never happen to anyone, and especially not to a child. Very brave to wright about it.
For me, the book was a bit longer than it needed to be. And it did jump around a bit.. The author explains why later in the book.
I was confused about why he wanted his parents in his life as an adult. But since I have not lived through abuse, and can't presume to know what that does to a person's ability to block out toxic people.
I enjoyed how he wrapped up the ending and I am happy he found his peace.

Thought and emotion provoking book!

This is a very good book. Although sometimes disheartening and painful to listen to because of the subject. I believe this type of child abuse happens more than is recorded or believed and we tend to not want to believe it's true. The narrator did a good job and I appreciate the authors candidness. I know this was extremely hard for the author to write and the pain of losing family on top of the abuse he endured, must have been unbearable at times. I was relieved in the end that the little boy who was so abused grew up to be a strong man and now has goodness, family and love in his life.

Heartbreaking but beautiful survival

There were times during this book when I had to stop listening because it broke my heart than anyone would have to suffer so much. It was worth it though because the story of someone who was beaten down so badly and still be able to survive and thrive is a hopeful inspiration to anyone struggling with hard times. I was given this free audiobook copy at my request for an honest review and have voluntarily left this review.

Abuse

It must have taken great courage to write this open and frank story of his life. Like the author I hope his story will help to enlighten others to see and report abuse and help victims of abuse.

It took great courage to write this book!

It took great courage, as well as love for children who are suffering, for the author to write this book. As I listened this book, I could feel the young boy’s pain, his isolation, and his rejection by his family. The authors insight into the value of the suffering and how it strengthened him in his adult life was the crowning jewel of this book.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is living in this type of situation and to foster parents. I wish I had read this book when I was caring for foster children.

Heartbreaking, raw honesty

It saddens me that any person should have to endure the kind of childhood experiences that this author has gone through, with the broken and distorted relationships he had with both parents, and especially his mother. Neglect, abuse and humiliation are not things that any child should grow up with, but somehow this author has emerged from his ordeal into a healthy, happy environment with loved ones who support him and a family of his choosing.

This is a heartbreakingly sad book that offers insight and understanding into the life of someone who was most vulnerable. It tells us what abuse abuse looks like, what it feels like, how it can manifest itself later in a victim's life, but it also provides hope. Writing a book like this is a courageous act, and I commend the author for it. I am glad he has found love, joy and fulfilment in his latter years, despite the challenges and hurdles thrown at him by his family.

The narration was also pitch perfect - a commendable job well done with a difficult subject. Altogether, this is an excellent book.

A Heart-Breaking Tale

A man in his 20's taking back his life. I really felt for the story being told, and it is always so interesting to me to hear stories of people that are able to overcome the challenges and the abuse they face. It isn't an easy thing, so I always feel so proud of these stories being shown. It raises a lot of questions about how you would react to a similar situation if you were aware of it.

A worthwhile listen

Having a son who's a social worker meant that maybe I wasn't quite as horrified as others listeners might be at this story. I wanted to listen to make sure when my son feels the need to talk about his work, I am able to listen intelligently. This book is a testament to the strength of character of the author. Time and again I was taken aback by his resilience, his bravery and courage. The fact that he went all the way through the school system, was the subject of numerous court battles and no one picked up on what was happening was, for me, the most appalling aspect of this story. The fact that family members knew and did nothing is abhorrent and the opening guidance from the author was spot on. I can only commend Karson Lee for his strength in writing this book and Todd Waites for what can't have been an easy narration. If we are to improve our social care we need survivors to show us where we went wrong. Thank you Mr Lee, and I wish you a future lifetime full of health, wealth and all the happiness you truly deserve.
