Story
Here I am: tall and broad, shaved head, had my nose broken three times fighting. Black suit, white shirt, the big city homicide detective. I've led investigations into serial killings, child abductions, organized crime hits, and domestic murders. But beneath the suit, I've got an om symbol in the shape of a Buddha tattooed on my right bicep. It balances the tattoo on my left ribs: Better to die on your feet than live on your knees. That's how I choose to live my life.

Tara Costigan was the woman next door. A hard worker. Quick to laugh and easy to like. She was happy, confident, strong. A woman who always looked after herself and her kids. Close with her family and her friends, she was much loved. Then, in 2013, she met Marcus Rappel. A local tradie, he was charming and sincere, they dated and fell in love. That should have been the end of a happy-ever-after story. But for Tara, it was much uglier. And for her family it would be devastating.

Publisher's Summary
From Michelle Knight - Cleveland kidnapping survivor and number-one New York Times best-selling author of Finding Me - comes an inspirational book about healing and resilience, on the five-year anniversary of her escape.
Michelle Knight - now known as Lily Rose Lee - captured the world's attention in May 2013, when she and two fellow kidnapping victims were found and freed after being held for more than a decade by notorious Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro.
But many people are still asking: What happened after her escape? How do you re-enter society after years of abuse and isolation? How do you get past the trauma and live a happy and joy filled life? How do you learn to trust again?
In Life After Darkness, published on the fifth anniversary of her liberation, Lily describes how she managed to heal the wounds to her body, mind, and soul - wounds, she reveals, that were first inflicted even before her kidnapping. With the help of good friends and anchored by her own inner strength, she takes us with her step by step on her journey out of darkness into the light.
An inspiring story - and for anyone who has dared to hope after suffering, a guidebook to finding new purpose for a meaningful life.

Riveting
I’ve read Lily’s previous book and the other girls too. I admire the strength each one has and I’m so glad they have found a life after their horrific ordeal. Lily does a amazing job in inspiring people and in educating them on abuse that occurs every day every where. I envy her ability to be so loving and caring and her deep desire to not be the person she could have easily become given the life she had had. Her faith is great and the blessings she has been giving since her release is so unselfishly shared with others. I hope she writes again in five years .

Great Inspiration
I've read all the books related to this tragic event and by far was moved most by this one. Lily opens up unapologetically about the healing that was required after her first 3 decades of life, and demonstrates the courage and true grit she possesses to move forward. I was in tears multiple times, both out of sorrow and pride. lily truly is an inspiration and I wish her the utmost happiness.

An interesting listen
This is a good book, it’s wonderful to hear how Lily has built a great life. I struggled with the narrator to begin with, but got used to her after the first chapter or two - I initially thought she sounded a bit prim and forced, but either she improved or I stopped noticing! I prefer the narrator of the first book. I look forward to hearing more about what Lily does in future. I feel like she’s still got a long way to go and I wish her all the success in the world.
