Ce court texte raconte la découverte que fit un jour le barbier Ivan Iakovlievitch dans le pain qu'il s'apprêtait à croquer un matin : un nez. Il cherche à s'en débarrasser, en vain. La police finit par arrêter cet homme qui tente désespérément de se séparer d'un nez. De son côté Kovaliov, assesseur au collège a perdu son nez, il ne reste plus qu'à le lui rendre. Mais le nez semble refuser de retrouver sa place sur la figure de Kovaliov et préfère mener sa propre existence. À travers un récit totalement fantastique et absurde, Gogol dépeint ici des hommes face à leurs angoisses et leurs relations qui ne sont qu'un semblant de raison masquant la folie.
