Publisher's Summary

Lady Maggie Windham has secrets, and she's been perfectly capable of keeping them...until now. When she's threatened with exposure, she turns to investigator Benjamin Hazlit to keep catastrophe at bay. But Maggie herself intrigues Benjamin more than the riddle she's set him to solve. As he uncovers more and more of her past, Maggie struggles to keep him at a distance, until they both begin to discover the truth in their hearts.

Great listen even when Lady Maggie whined

James Langton is a really great narrator, especially when the story characters are mostly very strong men. Grace Burrowes is a gifted and talented author/character developer. The Wyndham series is one of my all-time favorites. The only negative is that sometimes....as in this book, the heroines whine. I detest whining. Otherwise, this book is well-worth a listen...or even multiple listens. When a book is good enought for a re-listen, it's a keeper.

So over the same frustrating heroines...

When I started reading this series I was able to slog through the tedious over abundance of details, extraneous POVs from side characters and unnecessary internal reflection because I rather enjoyed the Windham men. And I kept up after the third book because Sophie’s story was actually sweet. But boy am I over the martyr complexes of Burrowes’ heroines. Every single book it’s been the same thing. I want to love these stories, and overall they aren’t bad, I have become rather attached to Gayle, Val and Devlin, but the portrayal of female characters just feels insulting. Yes, women can be stubborn but to have all these female characters who keep holding onto important secrets and going so far as to make them seemingly insurmountable obstacles to their respective happy endings is just exhausting. At least the narration wasn’t horrible. I’m not usually a fan of male narrators for these kinds of stories but this narrator does a good job of diversifying the different character voices, though his female voices are a little grating.

Fabulous

Great characters, great story! The best and most memorable moment comes when Maggie realizes she's never been as "alone" in her struggles as she assumed. I love the supportive family in this series.
