Publisher's Summary

The Greatcoats have found the heir to the throne...but now they must keep her alive, against all the odds.

Falcio Val Mond has completed the final task given to him by the late King Paelis: he has found the King's Charoites (well, one at least). But his task isn't over, and now he, Kest and Brasti must protect the girl from those who want her dead.

That would be simple enough, if it weren't for the renegade Knights and legendary Dashini assassins getting in their way - not to mention the Dukes, who are desperate to hold on to their power at any cost; Trin, the merciless daughter of the ruthless Duke of Rijou; and the cruel Duchess of Hervor, who is determined to be Queen of Tristia.

Of course, the fact that the heir to the throne is 13 years old doesn't help, nor the fact that every day brings Falcio closer to dying from the poison running through his veins. And then there is the Greatcoat's Lament....

Enjoying this series very much

Really thoroughly appreciating this series, everything about it, story, characters, performance, including the swearing. The swearing makes it real.

Pulse pounding action

This was a great continuation to the series,
A character driven plot, swordfights galore and some spine tingling moments of triumph, pane and valour. The pace hardly ever let's up and when you think that things have finally slowed down enough for you to rest, the twist will leave you reeling.
Jo Jameson's performance tipped me right into the middle of the story and made the interactions between the characters that extra bit more real, their banter that extra bit funnier and the dark parts in the story that extra bit darker.
A page turner, for lack of a better phrase. I will be reading on.
And perhaps if you grew up with the three musketeers, either read the books or watched the films, you might just like this series.

5 stars well deserved!

Just like the first book, action, suspense, intrigue; everything needed to keep you hooked until the end.
Sometimes a little frustrating that everyone seems to have answers but are unwilling to share, so poor Falcio has to figure everything out himself, sometimes too late!!
Just as the first, Joe does a fantastic job with the narration! I have no idea how he does some of the female voices, it’s almost like it’s a different person doing those!!
Looking forward to starting the 3rd book! :)
