Publisher's Summary

When Flint Fireforge, dwarf and metalsmith, receives a wondrous summons from the Speaker of the Sun, he journeys to the fabled elven city of Qualinost. There he meets Tanis, a thoughtful youth born of a tragic union between elf and man. Tanis and Flint, each a misfit in his own way, find themselves unlikely friends.

But a pompous elf lord is mysteriously slain, and another elf soon meets the same fate. Tanis stands accused, and if his innocence cannot be proven, the half-elf will be banished forever. Solving the mystery will be a perilous task. Time is on the murder's side, and he is not finished yet.

An excellent prequel

I enjoyed this story, a nice history of two favourite characters. The narration was good although initially I wasn't very sure, but I quickly warmed to it.

Great Book!

This book is a great introduction to the Companions, or at least to two of the Companions: Flint Fireforge and Tanis Half-Elven. Tanis endures the open prejudice of the elves because of his human father and finds comfort in his friendship with Flint, who endures the tribulations of being a dwarf in the elven city of Qualinost. The friendship between the two Companions blossoms against the backdrop of a murder mystery that does not fully resolve until the final climatic twists. For long-time fans of the Dragonlance series, such as myself, this book offers glimpses of events to come during the War of the Lance and the Chaos War. The performance was excellent, and Mr. Stillwell deserves much credit for bringing these characters alive.

Decent

The story was good but it was slow but it was good to see how tanis and flint meet. The narrator did a good job. But overall I wish it had a bit more of fight scene at the but overall it was still a good story.

Elvish Culture

I liked the story and looking back it was a great tale but it could have used some more adventure for my liking. I plan on listening to the next story after this to get more of a feel for the world. This one had some slow spots and it didn’t really get interesting until the end.
The person that narrated the book did an amazing job and I’ll be looking for more stories read by him.

Does not fit into Dragonlance sagas

This book was beyond boring. I can't even finish it! I loved the original Dragonlance books and have listened to them over and over. This book is just one long yawn. While not a professional, I do write and I do understand story elements. This had no tension, no arching story line and an utter lack of good characters. All of the characters seem to be the same. Unfortunately, the narrator had nothing to really work with. Pass on this one if you don't want to taint your opinion of Tanis and Flint. AKA, Flanis....( all characters are same )
