Publisher's Summary

What if only kind of knowing your family’s heritage is actually kind of lame? For Mindy Kaling, the number one bestselling author of Why Not Me?, the search for an answer begins with an Edible Arrangement of chocolate-covered strawberries and a Hindu priest.

Like Kelly Kapoor on The Office, Mindy is engaged with her Indian heritage to the extent that it is fun and convenient. So apart from a tolerance for spicy foods and an appreciation for Ravi Shankar, Mindy isn’t all that Hindu. Her daughter’s Jewish godfather--TV and film’s B.J. Novak--prompts her to reconsider her religious beliefs and ask herself: How Indian do I want my daughter to be?

From the acclaimed writer, actor, director, producer, and New York Times bestselling author comes Nothing Like I Imagined. In these essays, Mindy Kaling shares the latest chapters of a multitasking life in Hollywood. Listen to them in a single sitting. They’re pitch-perfect.

Tradition

We may not understand why, but we know what we must do to stay connected to faith and family. Well done!

Mindy Kaling is hilarious and this story is so relatable

I find Mindy Kaling to be hilarious and relatable and this story about her loose connection to her faith and her desire to pass it down to her daughter - despite not understanding the traditions- is very relatable. I love that the author reads these stories herself.

Kind of Methodist

My dad passed away 8 years ago. As my kids are/have gone through confirmation, this resonated with me. (This review will make a lot more sense after you have read this book.)

A relatable mother’s journey of intertwined beliefs.

Having been a long time fan of this badass mujer, she was so eloquent and captivating in a personal journey of tough parental decisions. The respect she shows for her daughter ugh virtual mama hug!! I baptized my son in a Catholic Church AND had his head shaving ceremony in India! I cried both times like a hot mess! My husband is from India & I’m Cuban-Nicaraguan American so I hope when he is older he values the importance of his ancestors cultural hope. Such a good quick story can’t wait to listen to the other ones!!
