Publisher's Summary

Gladiator meets Game of Thrones: a royal woman becomes a skilled warrior to destroy her murderous cousin, avenge her family, and save her kingdom in this first entry in a dazzling fantasy epic from the New York Times and USA Today best-selling author of the Elemental Assassin series - an enthralling tale that combines magic, murder, intrigue, adventure, and a hint of romance.

In a realm where one’s magical power determines one’s worth, Lady Everleigh’s lack of obvious ability relegates her to the shadows of the royal court of Bellona, a kingdom steeped in gladiator tradition. Seventeenth in line for the throne, Evie is nothing more than a ceremonial fixture, overlooked and mostly forgotten.

But dark forces are at work inside the palace. When her cousin Vasilia, the crown princess, assassinates her mother the queen and takes the throne by force, Evie is also attacked, along with the rest of the royal family. Luckily for Evie, her secret immunity to magic helps her escape the massacre.

Forced into hiding to survive, she falls in with a gladiator troupe. Though they use their talents to entertain and amuse the masses, the gladiators are actually highly trained warriors skilled in the art of war, especially Lucas Sullivan, a powerful magier with secrets of his own. Uncertain of her future - or if she even has one - Evie begins training with the troupe until she can decide her next move.

But as the bloodthirsty Vasilia exerts her power, pushing Bellona to the brink of war, Evie’s fate becomes clear: she must become a fearsome gladiator herself...and kill the queen.

Loved it.

Fell in love with it and can't wait until the next one in the series comes out. I had a hard time stopping it so that I could go to sleep to get some rest before I had to go to work and then I would listen to it on the way to work.

Both the author and the narrator did good jobs at making this book come alive and my imagination soar to what might come next.

Many of the same things Gin Blanco has

The story is very good it builds up to a great ending a little stereo typical, and if you read any of the elemental assassin/Jen Blanco series you’ll find so many similarities down to some of the same names, powers (ice), special abilities/ talents(cooking) and concepts. But overall, still super happy with it.

Gripping

I was swept away to a kingdom, in the past or a dystopian future wouldn’t matter. The plot was absolutely gripping. It was a testament to personal discipline that I was able to pull away from the vivid world painted here in this first book of what promises to be a thrilling series.

I devour books with strong female protagonists. Jennifer Estep writes my kind of series. If a reader was similarly inclined and hasn’t had the experience of Lauren Fortgang’s noteworthy performance in Ms. Estep’s Spider Assassin series, don’t miss out. Lauren is an accomplished actor with clear personalities and voices for all the characters she inhabits.

Loved it!

Jennifer Estep was one of the first books I purchased through Audible a few years ago. I loved her writing and for whatever reason, totally forgot that fact. I'm so glad to have found this new series!!

I love the worlds that Estep brings to life. The elemental magic aspects of her characters are unique and make for a variety of dramatic opportunities.

This listen was so good on so many levels! The main character, Lady Everleigh, was sympathetic and by all accounts, a reluctant hero. She was the very essence of 'greatness being thrust upon her.'

The narrator was equally awesome. I can't wait to see what happens next.

very predictable. average dialog.

Reasonable juvenile fiction but the plot and characters are not well developed and the action is extremely predictable. Will not be buying other titles in this series

🙄🙄🙄

As a whole, I enjoyed Kill the Queen. The book has its share of gore, fighting, and villians who are actually bad. There isn't too much on any one thing in this novel and that is both good and bad at times. I started listening while I was stuck in traffic and finished it the next day. I tried to save some but like a kid I kept listening to just one more chapter until I realized it was all gone.

Our main character, Evie, is forced to flee her semi-comfortable life and seeks shelter in a traveling Gladiator camp. This character tells the reader she is 28, but to be honest the plot and background of the book is suited for a YA novel rather than Epic Fantasy. There are a couple of curse words but no sex scenes nor detailed violence that can't be seen on the common cartoon.

The book has a good flow and pace. Doesn't linger too long in any one spot. However, there are some small things that bother me. For example, Evie hints at this ultimate betrayal from her cousin 15 years ago and it is used to build tthe readers dislike of Vasalia. But when it is finally revealed I was utterly underwhelmed. It wasn't even a betrayal but more like kids being mean to each other. When you use the word betrayal then it just means something different in my eyes. The villian eventually gives you other reasons to hate her but the initial one just wasn't all that deserving of being so important and drawn out.

Also, why does Jennifer Estep like to kill off parents so much? Every book has a character whose parents get assassinated. It's predictable at this point.

The narrator does a job with this novel.

3 Stars 🌟🌟🌟- Good Book. I like the overall concept and it was delivered well. Most common ranking for a book I enjoyed and look forward to the next.

Truly enjoyed this story. Fun characters, interesting heroine, and delightful setting. A little predictable at times but still enjoyed hearing how it all played out. Can't wait for the next! Excellent narrator

Great potential!

Kill the Queen; a Crown of Shards novel by Jennifer Estep came out just a couple weeks ago. It didn’t pop up on my radar until people started talking about it on Faith Hunter’s Jane Yellowrock page. Seeing as those people are my people, I decided to give it a look. I am super glad I did and you will be too!!!!

While the premise is not really all that original, Estep’s characters are creative and her storytelling is imaginative. You want to like all the good guys and easily hate all the bad guys. The Magics are wonderful and fun, though I would like a bit more in-depth knowledge of where the magic comes from. They test to see who is magically inclined, but Having read a lot of supernatural books, etc.... I would like more detail.

I am anxious to see where this series goes. I don’t normally look for a lot of sexy talk, but the two main characters need some heat.

I listened to the audio, the narrator, Lauren Fortang, is GREAT!! I will look for more from her.

Long Live the Queen!!

NUMBER OF HEARTS: 5
Long Live the Queen!!!

What a wonderful wonderful first book in a series. I was hooked from the very first page of this book. I love Everleigh (aka Evie)!! She is awesome, tough and not willing to give up even when the odds are 100% against her. I can’t wait to see how much she grows in this series. And Sully oh man I sure hope I know where Ms. Estep is taking him :D.

As with all first books there is a lot of world building but Ms. Estep is extremely talented at keeping the story from getting bogged down by all the information you are getting.

I had the great pleasure of listening to Lauren Fortgang bring Jennifer Estep characters to life. This was my first book narrated by Ms. Fortgang. I really enjoyed the way that she handled each character. I look forward to listening to more books narrated by Ms. Fortgang.

Just remember someone always wants to kill the Queen.

I loved this powered through it fast! Addictive!

I loved this so much! One of the best books I've listened to in ages. Captivating world and characters woven in to a story I couldn't wait for the end of but so so sad when it finished because it means I have to wait for the next book to be published. Great narrator essay to listen to.
