Publisher's Summary

The latest book in the Audie-nominated Spellmonger series.

Minalan’s Summer Vacation!

What does the most powerful wizard in the world do after the war is over? Despite the hordes of goblins still ready to ravage human lands, King Rard has signed a treaty with them, so Minalan is forbidden from taking advantage of their weakened state. Most would take a well-deserved rest over the summer…but Minalan and his household are busy repaying a favor owed to the tribal Kasari for their help in the war, and the Spellmonger pays his debts. So Minalan spends his summer sneaking 2,000 Kasari children through enemy lines, goblin territory, hostile Wilderlords, and through some of the roughest territory in the Five Duchies toward salvation.

But the Spellmonger soon learns that not even the help of a goddess is going to be sufficient to contend with the realities of the quest. Despite his best efforts and some of the most advanced magic seen since the Magocracy, the march attracts enemies…and far too many friends.

For when the desperate refugees of the war-torn Alshari Wilderlands see the well-fed legions of Kasari march by, they cannot help but follow, even if they have no idea of the destination. Any life is better than the hopeless existence they’ve lived avoiding starvation and the goblins’ stewpot. And the promise of hope the great march of the Spellmonger’s children offers is just too good to pass up. Security and the promise of a brighter future lie just on the other side of the border with the duchy of Castal.

The problem is that the Duke of Castal, Prince Tavard, who is also Minalan's titular overlord, is dead-set against a single Alshari refugee crossing his frontier - and he’s assembled a small army to stop any from doing so. With political pressure high and the very gods maneuvering behind the scenes, it’s going to take some clever magic, some inspired legal maneuvering, and some serious effort to pull off this miracle… but that’s the kind of job the Spellmonger does in Journeymage!

Journeymage

This audible was a little shorter than others in the series yet I found it very well presented. The introduction of familiar and new faces rounded the book out well. The exploration of the divinity was rather well presented and the Spellmonger’s irreverent attitude was most amusing.
In my mind it set up a number of new road paths the Spellmonger will take and doing so enables the reader to have something to look forward to.
Overall I enjoyed this audio book and highly recommend it to others.

this was Great

This was a great in-between sort of chapter in the Spellmonger Series. I have enjoyed Minalan's character so far, but this showed a benevolence that I wished all people shared.

Oh the struggle of waiting for the next installment; oh but I shall wait. Woe unto me a unfulfilled desire. Unrequited and languid in the grace of every word lest spoken.

Had some solid humour and plot progression but a shorter book than some of the previous books.

Boy Scouts

One of the major obvious themes with this book is the concept of Boy Scouts. Much of the terminology (ranks, patrols, sashes, scarves, decorative knots) is derived almost directly from them. As a scout leader I dont mind the references.

Feels like a filler episode

Not a bad story, but it just seems like it's a filler between the actual story.
Nothing much happens, and I doubt readers would need much more than the last 10-15 minutes of this book before reading the next in the series.
All in all it's a somewhat short story in the usual surroundings and very little plot progression to speak of.

A surprise treat.

I listened to this straight after book 5, and didnt expect much. I loved books 1-5 but the concept of Book 6 didnt appeal to me. Marching refugee kids through alshar sounded very dull. How wrong I was! The second half of this book was phenomenal! loved it

More of the same but still a good book

Good strong storey but sometimes wallowing in meaningless details. Great for building up the story line but over done in places. This seams to be a bit of a filler book Can't wait for the next one in the series

This series is amazing x

The spellmonger series goes from strength to strength. The witty but meaningful writing, the characters, and the simple joy of the fantasy make it a treat to read. This is all helped along by the rich narration.

I can't wait for the next one x

Nice transitional book in the series

I really enjoyed this one (as I did the others). It's a bit slower on the action but transitions the reader well ready for the instalment I would guess.

Series has diverged from the original storyline

Enjoyed it as I am invested in the characters, as its so far into the series, especially as I listen to them back to back. however the original excitement and purpose for the books seems to have been put on hold in favour of a more gentle and character focused part of the overall story. Still enjoyable as a part of the series, however as a single book I doubt it would have much clout or purpose.
