Do živelně vznikající osady se stahují horníci z druhé strany hor. Vidina rychlého zbohatnutí však přitahuje i mnohé, kteří nepřichází jen za čestnou obživou. Krátce po příjezdu Jiřího Adama dojde k vraždě šenkýře Margolda. Zdá se, že jde o banální zločin, jenže svědci hovoří o dvou démonech. Vyjde najevo, že obdobná vražda se stala před dvěma dny, kdy zemřel řeznický mistr. A další zločin na sebe nenechá dlouho čekat…
