Story
Supernatural Squad might be small, but we're growing in power. The vampires and werewolves of London are beginning to respect me more, and I feel like I know what I'm doing - even if I don't yet understand what I truly am. Unfortunately, there might be a few snags to deal with. I'm trying to avoid Lord Horvath, the black-eyed vampire leader who seems intent on a more intimate relationship. There's also Devereau Webb, who runs a small criminal syndicate and has offered me a mysterious gift that I'm certain I don't want.

Story
I’m one placement away from becoming a fully fledged London detective. It’s bad enough that my last assignment before I qualify is with Supernatural Squad. But that’s nothing compared to what happens next. Brutally murdered by an unknown assailant, I wake up 12 hours later in the morgue - and I’m very much alive. I don’t know how or why it happened. I don’t know who killed me. All I know is that they might try again.

My parents were brutally murdered when I was five years old. Their killer has spent the last 25 years in prison for his terrible crimes - but I still have unanswered questions. After all, I am the phoenix. When I die, I am reborn in fire and brimstone. It happens again and again and again. I have no idea where my strange ability came from and nobody to ask. Now another shocking murder has been committed in the small village where my parents died and there is evidence which suggests the killer is supernatural.

Story
The Supernatural Summit is about to start at the DeVane Hotel in London. Vampires and werewolves, ghouls and gremlins, and pixies and druids have all come together to find better ways to get along with the human community and address the strict laws that govern their existence. It's a real opportunity to change the world for the better, and I'm proud to be a part of it. But there are protestors camped outside the hotel and dangerous rumors circling about one of the delegates. When a dead body is discovered, I know it's only a matter of time before all hell breaks loose.

Devereau Webb is in uncharted territory. He thought he knew what he was doing when he chose to enter London's supernatural society, but he's quickly discovering that his new status isn't welcome to everyone. He's lived through hard times before, and he's no stranger to the murky underworld of city life. But when he comes across a young werewolf girl who's not only been illegally turned but who has also committed two brutal murders, he will discover just how difficult life can be for supernaturals - and also how far his own predatory powers extend.

I hunt demons. I don’t work for them. And I promised my mom one thing before she was murdered: Under no circumstances would I ever go near the high demons. But I’ll break that promise over and over again if it helps me avenge her death. When my only lead turns to ash in the middle of demon territory, I’m suddenly a dead witch walking. Violence in Samael’s club is an automatic death sentence…unless he can use you. And it turns out that the most powerful demon in the country has a use for little ol’ me.

She desperately wants to be accepted by her surrogate family, not least because a lot of them hate her for merely being human, but for some reason her blood just won't allow the transformation to occur.

You'd think that life would finally be dealing Mack Smith a kind hand. Living in London and with the opening of the new and improved city version of Clava Books mere days away, things appear to be settling down. Other than the terrible nightmares about dragons, that is. Or the fact that she's being constantly tailed by a string of mages, shifters, and faeries, all of whom are constantly demanding her attention. And that's without even bringing the temptation of Corrigan, Lord Alpha of the Brethren, into the equation.

I’m Jinx. As a private investigator, being a walking, talking lie detector is a useful skill - but let’s face it, it’s not normal. When I’m hired to find a missing university student, I hope to find her propped up at a bar - yet my gut tells me there’s more to this case than a party girl gone wild. She’s also being tracked by the implacable and oh-so-sexy Inspector Stone. Stone and I team up, and he shoves me into a realm where magic is real – a place where there are vampires and werewolves, dragons and trolls.

My new alpha did the impossible. He freed my hobbled wolf. And though I've craved a pack and an alpha since I was a rejected kid, I rebel against being anything less than his equal—even as my wolf worships the very ground he walks on. Flung headfirst into the supernaturals' world, I am no longer a lonely, agonized outcast running from the moon. My power is growing, I have amazing people around me, and the grateful mayor has set me up with an office and a legitimate job. Then a human hires me to go after the vampires and my world explodes into chaos. Good thing I like chaos.

Story
The hot, dominant vampire god and I have a bad history together, one I can’t remember and he can’t let go. I won’t deny the scorching heat and attraction between us, but I’ll be a fool to surrender to Marlowe’s seductive and destructive power. And we have a bigger problem. War, the third horseman who refused to leave Earth, has set his sight on me. If Marlowe can’t forgive my sins and I can’t trust him again, War will take me and terror will reign on Earth.
Publisher's Summary
A gruesome case of grave-robbing lands on Detective Constable Emma Bellamy's desk. But is there more to it than meets the eye?
Being the sole police detective in London's Supernatural Squad is no easy task. I have to navigate my way through a world teeming with supernatural creatures, from vampires to werewolves and everything else in between. My inexperience might count against me but my own shocking supernatural abilities will stand me in good stead - especially when I'm confronted yet again by the gruesome spectre of death....
A vampire has been mysteriously killed in the centre of the city.
Werewolf graves have been plundered for their bodies.
And I think I might be developing an ill-advised crush on a certain black eyed vampire Lord.
Infernal Enchantment is the second book in the thrilling Firebrand urban fantasy series. If you like dark twisty mysteries, smart heroines, and the faintest touch of slow-burn romance, then you'll love Helen Harper's mystical adventure.

Phoenix rising - improves on the first
On the plus side, book 2 expands on the tired vampires vs werewolves schtick, adding ghouls and opening the door on Emma as a Phoenix. Also, there are several new, and hopefully recurring characters to add more variety, including a pickpocket crime boss and fleshing out the personalities of the four alpha weres. The mystery is also better written. The multi-book plots of Emma’s nature and the potential romance with Lucas proceeds slowly (reaaaal slow in the case of romance). Emma dies a lot, and there’s potential for humor and growth, ala Buffy the Vampire Slayer snark (please lean into the fun!, fingers crossed for future books!)
On the down side, this is still a pretty shallow, almost cozy listen (there’s occasional Fx, but otherwise these are profanity, gore, and sex-free). The lack of clever dialogue or detail on settings or character backstories keep this in matinee popcorn territory. Worse, at this point, two books in, the characters are all whiter than white, with ultra white characters with ultra white names (Emma, Lucas, Frank), and ultra white customs and cultures. The lack of human diversity is particularly unfortunate considering the diversity of paranormal creatures in this modern day London area.
But, I still found this a fun sale listen, and hope book 3 continues to improve.
For better London paranormal series, I recommend:
📍Alex Verus, with a 12 book series arc. Verus may be your typical white “Dresden” MC, but the supporting cast includes fabulous gals, minorities, and creatures. This is missing the police procedural side, but weaves a better tale of good vs. evil.
📍Rivers of London series, starting with Midnight Riot, and starring half black Peter the detective and fledgling magician. The writing is more complex, funny, and also dark.
If you want fantastic, and fun, urban fantasy with a non-police, mystery procedural, head across the pond to Texas and the Hidden Legacy series, written by author team Ilona Andrews. Don’t let the weird romance covers turn you off; these books are more about magic, action, and family than romance.

Please, please continue this series beyond a trilogy!
This is a fantastic world Helen Harper has created; narrated flawlessly by Ruth Urquart picks up where book 1 left off.
D’Artagnan (Emma) is now Londons only Detective in the Supe department. She is blazing a new path forward in her life. She is strong, funny and so very smart. The mysteries are fantastic and can easily see this series having life beyond the trilogy format.
Please please continue this series!

Slow slow
I do like the series but I hate how slow going it is she doesn’t even have any real powers at least she finally knows what she is but honestly I actually prefer a supernatural heroine with more kick ass powers if I wanted a normal person I would be reading a contemporary not a supernatural romance but yeah my biggest complaint about this series is she is always getting killed or hurt she has no special powers except coming back to life I’m debating on continuing with next book I’m getting bored with how weak she is I love the narrator she does an amazing job with all the voices
