Erneut hat sich der große Erzähler Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in den Reform Club begeben, um selbst eine weitere Geschichte aus seiner umfangreichen Sammlung zu präsentieren. Der Schauplatz der Handlung ist diesmal die schottische Hauptstadt Edinburgh, genauer gesagt das Medizinische Institut der dort ansässigen Universität. Der Universitätsdozent Professor McGee bekommt kurz nach dem Tod seiner Frau merkwürdige Briefe und tote Vögel von einem Unbekannten zugeschickt. Während sich sein Umfeld Sorgen macht, nimmt der Professor die Angelegenheit nicht sonderlich ernst. Er hält das Ganze für einen üblen Studentenscherz und ahnt nicht, dass er damit einen Menschen in Lebensgefahr bringt.
