About this listen

In addition to strength, steel, and courage, a hero discovers he's in need of a friend, in the first installment of a daring and dangerous fantasy adventure.

When it comes to action and adventure, every hero needs a good sidekick. Holmes has Watson, Batman has Robin, and Daniel has . . . Orrin. More like brothers than friends, they always have each other's backs. And as Daniel is the big, strong, handsome type, Orrin is more than happy to remain in his shadow at school, at parties, pretty much everywhere.

Then things take a turn for the truly weird when a terrible accident catapults the pair into a world totally unlike their own, in which the rules of a role-playing game hold sway. Naturally, Daniel is classified as a "hero," while Orrin is—also naturally—relegated to the fantasy equivalent of "bleh." Nothing new there.

But in this realm populated with lethal foes both inhuman and inescapable, sticking together matters more than ever, and soon Daniel and Orrin will discover more about themselves—and each other—than either one thought possible. In fact, Orrin just might find the confidence and strength to become something other than your average sidekick . . .

The first volume of the hit LitRPG fantasy series—with more than 600,000 views on Royal Road—now available on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, and Audible!

Definitely going to buy the next book. It's well written and Nick Podel was excellent as always. it's just a pity that instead of saying words (such as abilities, titles, etc) as a part of a conversation it's announced like an announcer at the start of a fight. still reccomend the book though

previous reviews nailed it

The narrator is good. But he made a weird choice and stuck with it for too long.
The book is interesting

That sure was a decision

The story is good but the OP trope wasn’t handled well. Also, the stark way any skill etc was spoken differently even in the middle of sentences was sadly ham fisted. I can only think this was a production decision as I’ve never heard that from such a good narrator before.
Still a fun read but frustrating at times.

Bad narration decision

Lots of adventure and excitement, the narrator is great, with the plot moving along at a good pace.
Keen to listen to the next book.

Exciting and great Narration

A fun story, interesting twist on the usual hero’s. The game speak can get monotonous though.

Interesting twist on hero polarity

liked it quite a bit but that game voice everytime abilities or classes are mentioned even in conversation is a real bummer I understand the choice but it just does not work for me

good story really bad narration choice

Highly anticipated and easy to follow. the duration of each chapter made it even better.

the story line

Sourpatch has done a great job of bringing their creative vision to life. It's an interesting world, and the writing is clear and attention grabbing.

The story itself is a little unfocused. Author needs a clearer understanding of character motivation, pacing, and how to write effective dialogue. Not bad for a first novel. (I assume)

Narration is good, though I agree with previous reviews regarding a creative choice that, unfortunately, doesn't work, specifically with character dialogue. I will continue to listen to at least one more book, but hope this is addressed in the future.

Enjoyable, but a little underbaked.

A little annoying to hear the skills menu read out all the time and in full but that’s a really minor complaint. It’s a good litrpg rebirth story. Can’t wait for book 2.

good

Loved that it was two friends that had been summoned. I have listened to a lot of LitRPG story's and this one I really enjoyed because of the friendship. Really not a fan of all the name of skills being said in a louder different voice to what's going on though.

Great!
