Sulla facciata di una casa a Londra, spicca la scritta: "Dickens non ha dormito qui". Lo stesso potremmo dire rispetto a Roma per gli scrittori europei dal Settecento ad oggi. Non c'è praticamente drammaturgo, poeta o romanziere che non abbia passeggiato fra le sue strade, lasciando traccia di tale esperienza in opere, lettere, appunti.
Com'è ovvio, le reazioni a quel viaggio appaiono estremamente disparate e contrastanti. Forse, però, nessuno avrebbe dissentito da quanto osservò Julien Gracq, quando arrivò definire la Città Eterna come "una macchina per ripercorrere il tempo".
