Il romanzo narra del giovane Mattia che, a seguito di una fortunata vicenda, e dopo una cospicua vincita al casinò, decide di seguire il destino che lo aveva fatto credere morto, e si inventa una nuova identità per godersi, senza troppi pensieri, la sua nuova vita e la sua piccola fortuna. Ma le cose non andranno come l'uomo aveva previsto e, qualche anno dopo, si vedrà costretto a tornarsene al suo paese , recuperando la sua vera identità, per cercare, per quanto possibile, di rimettere a posto le cose.
Così, inscenando un altro finto suicidio, "uccide" Adriano Mei, la nuova identità assunta in quegli anni, e torna al suo paese, dove trova che sua moglie, in quegli anni, credendolo morto, si è risposata col suo migliore amico, Pomino. Un romanzo veramente avvincente, degno del migliore Pirandello, pieno di colpi di scena e di situazioni a volte grottesche e assurde, che ne fanno un autentico capolavoro.
