Publisher's Summary

He was etched by the desert's howling winds, a big, broad-shouldered man who knew the ways of the Apache and the ways of staying alive. She was a woman alone raising a young son on her own on a remote Arizona ranch. And between Hondo Lane and Angie Lowe was the warrior Vittoro, whose people were preparing to rise against the white men. Now the pioneer woman, the gunman, and the Apache warrior are caught in a drama of love, war, and honor.

Richardman on Hondo

I've read all of LL and now listening is just as good. Hondo is well worth the time to listen.

Another great book

Just enjoyed it thoroughly. Simple pleasures; like pizza and beer. Or, wine and cheese. Take your pick. L'Amours's books are just like that. A sheer pleasure to read. Nothing to worry about. No threat, no sweat. Just pure country pleasure wrapped up in a lean, mean cowboy who can shoot fast, and walk hard --- and some pretty women (who might be good or bad). PLOTS generally run the same, but what the heck. So do the romances, and the mysteries.Yet, read them we do. Simmer down and enjoy.

Almost Perfect

The only thing that would've made it Perfect is if there were descriptive sex scenes. This book is rated PG-13 for sure, how general the Author is with the romantic portions. A-

Not quite the classic I had heard it was

I grew up in Texas so wanted to give the Western genre a try. After some searching, Hondo came highly recommended as a must read. I think my disappointment came in the last quarter of the book where I felt the story-telling became uneven, even difficult to follow at times. Perhaps it reads better than it narrates. The resolution of the central relationship was unsatisfying to me, but I have to admit it felt more or less authentic and plausible. Some of the stereotypes got a little tedious to my modern ears (the characterization of women, men, and Indians), but what can you really expect from a book that is 70+ years old. In that sense, the recounting of such attitudes was somewhat depressing to me. The narration was well matched, with the narrator setting a good emotionless tone for the story, reflecting the emotionless character of the harsh terrain.

True Love

If you loved John Wayne's movie or the TV show you will really enjoy this book. It is really a love story with a western theme.

very entertaining!

Great story. Wonderful narrator. Loved the character Hondo and that this was not only a great western story but there was also a well told romance.

I can smell the air

L’Amour is one of those rare authors who possess an uncanny ability to give you senses among the pages. You can feel the heat of the sun and see the lines in the character’s expressions. Hondo is a prismatic man and Angie a stoic but tender woman, unlike the flat heros and damsels in many romances. Their personality layers are peeled back with the pages. Your taken on a journey of ups and downs without the traditional flow of a singular climax and happy ending. The narrator is absolutely appealing. Giving depth to side characters without overly playing them and seeming theatrical. I thoroughly enjoyed his reading of this beautifully descriptive story.

just ok at times it seemed to lag.

it was dragging on at times. I thought the action was hit or miss with not much inbetween.
