Publisher's Summary

Jace Warin never wanted anything more than to attend the School of Swords and Serpents to escape the labor camps and restore his family's stained honor.

But the determined young martial artist soon discovers the school he's always dreamed about is teeming with secret plots and sinister designs. To survive, he will have to master long-lost jinsei techniques, repair his wounded soul, and face down a most unexpected enemy: The Academy's ruthless headmaster and cunning professors.

Hollow Core is the first book in the School of Swords and Serpents series, a tale of wuxia adventure, cultivation mastery, and lurking threats.

“Wow, this book is crazy-good. If the Harry Potter series were somehow violently smashed together with the characters from Mortal Kombat, you might have something that comes close to the School of Swords and Serpents.” (James A. Hunter, best-selling author of Rogue Dungeon, Bibliomancer, and the LitRPG epic Viridian Gate Online)

WTF?? why make this

the most depressing sadistic pile of poop I've had the unfortunate experience of listening to. this is for people that want to escape into a world of suck. is your life too good? are you too fortunate? do you wish that your life have more pain and suffering? well let this book carry you away! you can put yourself in the shoes of someone who the very fabric of reality is contrived to make their life suck. and don't worry it never stops till the end of the book which will probably be difficult for anyone to get to if you happen to be a fan of normal cultivation novels. it seems like this author tries so hard to not create an overpowered MC that he donkey punches the MC Oblivion.

don't like

I just don't like it because too submissive also like punishing the main character in this life it's unnecessary and it just like everybody being mean to him and it just don't make sense just doesn't

Another Weak MC

I should have listened to the review that said the MC was too submissive. If you want to listen to a book about torture, abuse, and slavery where everything bad that can happen to the MC does and nothing good happens then read this book. But It was so cringeworthy I could barely finish it. Don't waste your time.

interesting story but with many problems

This is a hard book for me to rate. The story is interesting but there are so many flaws that I cant count them on two hands. If you are uninterested in hearing about such flaws skip the second paragraph. I like the idea of how the main characters path develops and the blend of mystic power and current technology is interesting. However, there are so many issues that I almost stopped listening.

Ill just rattle them off. If you dont want to hear a rant, skip this. The main character is submissive, weak(eventually not physically but always emotionally), and extremely unclever. The actions/events are extremely juvenile and impractical. There is no society anywhere that considers yes or no answers only as a fair trial. Thats not even reasonable. Everyone hates the main character immensely with very little cause except for a core group of friends that sprouted out of nowhere. Even if there was an entire class of what amounts to basically slaves, how does one have access to the internet but is not allowed to read. Why cant you afford cell phones but have social media and articles. I'm sorry thats a massive plot hole. When a military member screams to react, they never ever say "go go go " its move...move move move. Go sounds like no and that is drilled into you. Why in gods green earth is murder in what amounts to a martial arts high school perfectly fine. Why do the professors have little to no power? Why does the entire world care what happens to this academy? shouldn't special interests of the rich and powerful care more about military strength, military academy maybe, or even private sector corporations, sects, or groups? not a rich kid high school? Should there not be main organizations of the different houses? And whats really the hiearchy here, if one of the most powerful men in the world is a dean at a high school who is constantly yelled at by children. .........whatever

I'm sorry, rant over. EVEN WITH ALL OF THAT, the main story is still semi interesting and I'm well on my way through book two. The main character has an interesting back story and I'm curious to know about what happened with his family. If your bored, its worth a credit.

Fantastic!

Great story and narration!

Jace has a damaged core, but wants to attend the Academy and win back his family's honor. Coming from the lowest rung it will be an uphill battle all the way as he faces discrimination for being a commoner, and is weak due to his issues with his core. He will have to be creative with the talents that he has if he hopes to stand a chance.

Pavi doe a tremendous job with the narration!

This story was great! I cant wait to find out what happens next!

Brutally awesome

Really cool premise from which to establish a series. I love the brutality of the school I just feel like the MC has more than his fair share of adversity. But he definitely comes out better because of it. The narration was solid.

Great Start to a series

Lots of typical tropes found here, but with new spins. An excellent start to a new series and gets you pretty invested early on.

Funny cultivation novel

This is the first cultivation novel that I "read" that is set in modern times, though not quite the world we know. I'll definitely be picking up the 2nd book.

This was phenomenal

This book definitely has a Harry Potter meets Mortal Kombat feel to and I love it! At first I was not sure how this book was going to play out but I loved the twist and turns of the story and the character cast was awesome and unique. But above the amazing characters is the amazing lore of the story you don't get the complete picture in this book however you definitely get tantalizing looks into how the book series could go. overall you should check this book out you won't regret it.

Great New Series

I read this as a book so wanted to see how it went with the audio and i was not disappointed at all , with any new series especially audio it does take a while to get into it. Even with knowing the book this was the same although 3 chapters in i was into the thread and away with the story. Proczko does a good job with Jace and the rest of the characters and i would go with this new narrator again. Knowing whats in store for more in the series i shall be getting a lot more of these in audio.
