Publisher's Summary

Heaven's Gate was a video game Alfred didn't intentionally join.

In fact, it wasn't technically a video game.

Alfred had somehow ended up on a planet millions of miles away from Earth, but with dungeons, hot girls, and strange creatures appearing at every turn. Just like a video game he could complete missions for experience, and even join a guild and play with friends. It almost seemed like a normal world until he discovered that in the planet, Heaven's Gate, your dreams could come true if you were brave enough to enter into the hardest dungeons.

He runs into some friends and foes in the game, and tries his hardest to conquer the legendary dream dungeons where all your dreams can come true if you can just survive. If you wish to revive someone, or learn a few "broken" skills, you can do it at the apex of Heaven's Gate.

Luckily, he's been training in martial arts since he was a kid, and seems to have a natural advantage in the game thanks to his martial prowess and sharp mind.

Juvenile wish fulfillment

I want to leave an honest review, but first I'll disclose that I didn't listen to the entire book. About three-quarters of the way through, I started to skip chapters. I usually never leave a review for a book I didn't fully complete, so perhaps the last quarter that I skipped was absolutely amazing work and I should feel shamed for not slugging through the entire book. I doubt it, but take that into consideration while reading this.

Heaven's Gate is a perfect example of why I used to think I disliked the LitRPG genre. It's still not my favorite, but Heaven's Gate is more of a juvenile's personal fantasy fulfillment than any kind of real novel. It may appeal to a 13-year old gamer, but for anyone else, its going to fall short with its arrow straight plot, simple character development, and overpowered protagonist. The plot itself barely makes sense and the characters often seem to make foolish or unrealistic decisions and actions. Some elements were okay, for example, the dialog wasn't awful and the POV perspective was done decently -- but overall, I would not want to read a second book in this series.

The narration did not help this book -- in fact, it may have hindered it. It's difficult to completely judge it as sometimes bad material can bring down a good narrator, but I don't think Richard's performance was very good. This may be my ethnocentric opinion, but it the narrator's heavy accent made it difficult to listen to and felt out of place with the characters (who I do not believe were supposed to be American). However, he did have good voice inflection and did a decent job representing some of the character's (limited) personalities. I'd be willing to give him another try, but I don't think he was a good fit for this book.

This audiobook was given to me free, and I voluntarily gave this review.

Great Start to a New LitRPG... I Loved It!

"I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review."

What a great start for this new LitRPG series. Writing was excellent, and the concept was really interesting. There isn’t much of a break between battle sequences, and leveling up is fast. Character development didn’t suffer, as you gain insight quickly into these unique and fascinating individuals. Any fan of this genre would do well to add this title to their library. Can’t wait until the next book is released.

Narration was excellent, and sound quality was good. I felt like he really got into the story, which really enhanced the performance. I’ll definitely seek out other audiobooks he’s involved with.

Too short

** I received a free copy of this book for review purposes, my review is voluntary and unbiased

So this is a certain type of Gamelit, not too crunchy, fast paced it has some harem themes, and is definitely aimed at youthful male escapist fantasy, the setting is a bit contrived, but for all that it is also very good. Our MC was essentially a superhero before he joined the game world, one of the worlds best martial artist at age 19 and so on, it's not terribly believable, but the story is fun and action packed if a bit mindless.

The characters themselves were surprisingly well written The dialogue was very natural for the most, the MC has some character growth over this short story.

The narrator was excellent, It took me a few minutes to get use to him but after that it was magnificent. Normally when you get a narrator with a British accent they go for a more refined smooth voice. This guy played up the youthful vibe in his voice and it just fit the story perfectly. He had good characterizations and didn't go over the top anywhere nothing felt gimmicky.

I'm definitely interested in a followup book

Great Introduction to a New Series

This was a great introduction to a new LitRPG/Fantasy series. It's an entertaining adventure that could be enjoyed solely as a fantasy novel, but with more when the elements of the LitRPG genre are brought in (but they're limited enough to not derail the story). The characters were fun, world was entertaining and original, and action was solidly written. The narrator was great as well. I'm definitely interested in exploring Heaven's Gate further.

Fun LitRPG/Gamelite adventure!

Fun story - Great narration!

After waking up in a mountain of corpses, the MC discovers that he has been 3d printed into a world governed by game mechanics at the whim of "The Light Bringers."

Level up, get the girl, and beat the dungeons to bring your loved ones back to life!?!

I'm looking forward to the next book in the series!

Great start and I’m hooked!

Narrator does a great job! Only complaint is there is one chapter heading he repeats himself on, but does great voices for everyone and has me looking forward to the next book! Only downside to the story is it’s a little short for audible as most people buy with credits and want to get some more length out of the credit they spend, but it’s worth it!

Good beginning

This is a good start to a series I do look forward to the next one. Not sure if this will become harem or not as there is a lot of focus on the women's attributes in this story.

Fast Paced

I was given this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
I love LitRPG books it was fast paced but the character development did not suffer. I have found some LitRPG novels fail in balancing story with game play but I thought this story did a pretty good job with that. If you enjoy the lighter side of this style I would say it is worth a listen.

Great Adventure!

Good adventure story! This adventure really didn’t need any reference to an RPG to be well plotted out. The author wrote this to be quite involving to the listener, Well Done! The narrator has the perfect voice type for this performance. He had timely, and thoughtful vocal inflections and pressure.
I would recommend this audiobook for ages 17 and older due to some adult situations and violence.
I was given this audiobook for free and I freely give it my rating and opinion.

Very Shallow

LitRPG is my favourite genre. Despite this, I couldn't finish this book. It was just too shallow. The main character had no fear for his life despite the first quest he took warning him it was too hard for him, and if he died, he would be thrown in with a load of dead bodies - assuming meaning that he would be perma dead? He was like nah its ok, back on earth I was the number 1 fighter in the world. There was no real thought, just acceptance of everything. Unnecessary highlighting of his friends boobs on their first meeting in this game world. Didn't bring anything to the story at all. Overly simplistic and juvenile.

Around 11 minute 41 sec, mark the narrator repeats himself "and hundreds of men in black suits turned as Alfred chased after the little red head. And hundreds of men in black suits turned as Alfred chased after the little red head". Surely an error?

The narrator did well despite the mistake above and the lack of depth in the book. He gave the characters their own voice which helped with identifying who was speaking at the time.
