Publisher's Summary
Lee has managed to survive encounters with the heralds of three different gods, but the price he has paid has been tremendous. Every step he takes leads him closer to victory in the cruel game he has been forced to play, but it also takes him further down a dark path and away from the man he used to be.
After receiving a request for aid from a beautiful and mysterious messenger, Lee and his inner circle travel to nearby Birnefeld, a large and prosperous city ruled by the dragon king. Before he ever arrives, however, Lee encounters a group of marauders ransacking the countryside, meets a strange new herald who has set up camp in the region, and receives the dire news that the hero Brigid of Kildare has gone missing. To make things worse, a powerful new enemy is stalking him from the shadows, toying with his dreams, and striking at his closest relationships.
With the seeds of doubt sown, Lee has to choose whom he can trust before his nightmares become reality and everything he has worked so hard for goes up in flames.

Amazing.
I had become one of my favourite series. I had originally only bought it because of Jeff Heys, but nearly returned the first book because the first chapter wasn't appealing to me. However, I quickly became engrossed in the story a couple months later when I listened to it for the hell of it.
Overall, it's an aw some story made even better by Jeff's talent and hard work. Coupled with Annie they're a great combination. I'm eagerly waiting for the next installment.

good story, HORRIBLE MC
Narrator is FANTASTIC and the idea for the magic system and main story line are unique and interesting. the secondary characters are hilarious and well written.
The Main Character however is a TOOL BAG!
I dont like him. I did in the 1st and 2nd book but half way through the 3rd and this one I've grown to hate him. The sexual frustration and insecurity is grating. I want to punch him.
I can tell what the auther is trying to portray however there isnt any substance to back it. he thinks he is a horrible person bc of his decisions however there isnt any decisions that would lead anyone to that conclusion. if anything he'd be labeled that bc of his LACK of decisions and his lying. or the fact that he completely ignores his God/father and the system lady who know WAY MORE than him. for no reason ether. his lack of love life is ridiculous and makes little sense. hiding behind a new relationship with a girl on another plain of existence for ignoring the advances of his dedicated companions. he was avoiding sex LONG before his "girlfriend"
one person, a computer generated person, dies and now he is self deprecating and borderline EMO. he lost his confidence that made him likable.
The only reason I got the 4th book is bc the other characters are awesome and the story behind the war and the gods have me hooked. LEE is a dipstick!

A live action masterpiece
First and foremost I’d to congratulate Charles Dean for his work on The series “War Aeternus”. I have finished all 4 books each as captivating and entertaining on its own unique way. A big shout out to the amazing work of Jeff Hays and Annie Aliecott from Soundbooth Theater. This is my 5th book I have finished from Charles Dean ( The Heroic Villain). This was my introduction to litrpg. I’m very pleased on how the scenes were painted to the point of its smallest details( especially battle scenes). Also I’m just going to put this out here, Soundbooth Theater is a masterpiece. I think the combination of both how detailed Charles is and how deep Jeff Hays gets into each character. The scenes are narrated to perfection. Where as in other narrative teams they need to point out certain emotions, Soundbooth theater is able to bring it to life with no description needed. You can feel how each emotion, mood is happening as its played out. There is a difference in describing and acting out the scenes. I’m very pleased with how they operate. I believe its a perfect combination like wine and cheese. So as a reader, I’d rather pay more for quality work to have Soundbooth Theater narratives. It’s such an amazing difference compared to other audiobooks. It can really ruin a good book to be honest, if the narrative team is not as competent and passionate with the work of the author. I seen it happen, and would just like to give authors and readers out there the outlook on both teams. Like I mentioned earlier I’d wait and pay more to have a team like Soundbooth theater work passionately and bring the book to life. I’m not knocking other narrative teams but if anything I want to motivate them to improve and use them as an example. I have waited to finish all 4 books before reviewing. I wanted to have an overall outlook on the series. Each book you become closer and closer to all characters. You can feel the transition and growth of each character throughout the series. I’d love to see maybe War Aeternus 5 one day. There was another post that made a good point, when we want a series to continue, a good way to do that is to promote all previous books. So that others readers are aware and can generate the demand for the author. So if you are a fan, like myself. I’m going to do my best to spread the word and preach War Arternus! Follow the God of alcohol and crafts! Bring as many followers as you can! For justice and Glory!

The Anti-Hero Lee.
So. This has been a journey for me. I believed Lee was the hero of the story for the first two books and then he was on a spiral in the third. In this book I realized. He isn't a hero. He is an Anti-Hero. Once you realize you start to know what is going to happen and it doesn't phase you anymore. This of Lee as a Miller who talks before he kills.
Once I realize this the whole series took a different turn for me and I enjoyed it much more. Lee does tons of morally questionable things and he does some pretty brutal things, but this world is brutal in itself. Lee has a lot of moral quandaries about what he does and his companions are all different angels and devils on his shoulders.
This book was amazing for me in a few ways. First it made me laugh out loud. This was mainly because of the sound booth production and the amazing work of both Jeff Hays and Annie Ellicott.
Second was the romance. There has been a "harem" developing for all four books but Lee has been a good faithful man to Masha. Even so, this book has some great scenes that dive deeper into each of the female cast making them feel so much more real.
Third is Jade. Jade is not only a good character but also a way for the author to break the fourth wall a bit. Although it is through anime interpretation most of the time, it is hilarious and heartwarming to have so much of Jade in this book. Especially this kind of book!
Fourth is the System. The System has grown as an actual character with moods and feelings. I really hope (she) isn't supposed to be a harem element, however I really want more interaction with (her). The System doesn't have a name and we don't really learn anything about (her) at all. (She) points this out in the book and I can't help but identify with and want to get to know (her) more.
I wish there was more town building elements. It is mainly glossed over in this book.
The relationships and events back on Earth were spectacularly executed and were a golden piece of writing.
I enjoyed what Brigid's little arc in this story and was surprised at the very end how it turned out. There is a battle that end rather abruptly which had me confused if it was actually over or not. I feel like it was slightly cut down for some reason. That is my only large qualm though.
Overall. This is an amazing piece of writing that I thoroughly enjoyed and sincerely hope there is more to this series.

Terrible turn to the series.
What the heck is the author thinking? It's like he woke up, sat down to write the book and thought, "How can I make my readers hate my characters?"
I found it stupid when the MC is talking about "acting" like a villain when in truth he IS one. I spent the whole book hoping their was some rational explanation for both his actions and the rest of his group, and it is still possible I guess that he is being affected by woman in his dreams, but there is zero evidence to support that being the case by the end. So in short he is just becoming a monster worse than half the people he has killed in previous books. Worse than that fool Miller too.
The MC gives no thought to how to deal with anything other than kill, kill, and kill some more. Oh, and not just on the bad guys. He just kills anyone that annoys him. Quite literally kills thousands of innocent people in this book, and while some of them might be argued as having been done with little choice he doesn't even look for another choice. Not only that, he ENJOYS it. Certainly he commits at least three cold-blooded murders in this book with none of them guilty of any crime.
So while some of the story is good I'm all about characters if I'm going to enjoy a book and I loathed the MC and Miller in particular in this book. I also do not think Lin would still be staying with him by now. Certainly if she finds out the stuff he has done when she wasn't there on top of what she was there to see.

Basically turns into your torture porn
Such a shame that the author took the main character down this path. I get that it's how he is reacting to the world, but it's rather sickening to listen to the constant torture, screams, and begging as the MC goes full tyrant.

pretty good
to me, there is a problem with how cemented he is to an awkward harem and the human world story is a bit contrived. but its very well written compared to almost any other lit rpg.
seems to embody a lot of subtle awkwatd simplistic anti idealist stuff which seems to fit a lot
, since lit rpgs are normally quite simplidtic and mary sue/about being op.
