Publisher's Summary

My skill set brings all the girls to the yard.

And by yard, I mean the temple of a young goddess who's using me to build a fortified city around herself before the god of war can finish slaying every deity in the heavens.

He'd better not find us before we're ready. Spoiler: We're far from ready.

But hey, I get a cool skill out of it. The goddess allows me to view anyone's strength, vivacity, and other attributes as though they were numbers on a menu and then use their life experiences to make them stronger. I can unlock their special skills, too, and it's all stuff no one else can see.

Hence the girls: a beastkin builder, a negotiatrix made of slime, a half-elf gypsy who charms snakes - and more - seeking safe refuge and a place to belong.

Think our ragtag group can survive a divine onslaught of apocalyptic proportions? I know what I think. Come on in and find out.

enjoyable if you know what you are going into.

Chris Graves did an excellent job first off.The voices were distinct and pleasant for each character. Some good parts were how the female characters had some interesting issues that really make you feel for them. The stats and method of progression was neat. It did feel a bit rushed for the development of the intimacy between the characters. Overall it's enjoyable not a masterpiece but fun.

Good Fantasy LitRPG

Well written. Could easily pass for a Fantasy tale, if there was no reference to stats or level up and main character depicted as simply a magician!
I’d recommend this story for ages 16 and older due to violence and adult situations.
I was given this audiobook for free and I freely give my rating.

A good story with a great narrator

So first: I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Now that that is out of the way. I did really like the story. I am a sucker for city building LITRPG's. Which this has. The general story is really good with interesting mechanics and concepts, and enjoyable characters. Where the story fails is where most Harems fail a bit. They rush the Harem. Women are attracted to a male protagonist who says he never had any luck with women before with no real reason on why he wasn't successful before except one example (Classism). I assume that one thing wouldn't have stopped him everywhere but it seems to have. Again I enjoyed the story, and hope the sequel gets put on here soon so I can enjoy it too (Please don't throw 20 women in. You can only really keep up with so many characters and that would push some I like into the background).

Onto the narrator. No complaints. He did an awesome job. I have listened to him before and have no complaints, his name on the audiobook is a plus on any book I see.

Pretty good with realistic expectations

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This is definitely one of those books that you have to set your expectations appropriately going in, or you are going to be disappointed. Having said that, I expected a lot of action, a harem element and game mechanics with a coherent story tying it all together. That is exactly what I got. If you aren't a fan of the genre, I'm 50/50 on if you'll like this book or not. I really enjoyed it. I thought the narration is great, the game mechanics were different, and the characters were engaging.

Not a bad entry book into LitRPG

Breaking Ground is the kind of series that would be a good entry into the LitRPG genre; the narrative doesn't break any new ground as it were, but it's definitely an enjoyable read. The harem aspect seems really rushed, and in my opinion probably should have been stretched out to make the relationships seem more organic. I hope the author expands on the relationships already established in the sequels and not ham-fist too many female leads if he can't handle it.

The narration was good; Chris Graves is a well-known and well-liked narrator and really knows how to bring some characters to life. That's one more "good job" from me.

Although I have been given a free review copy of this audiobook, it has in no way affected my review.

Great New LITRPG Series!!!

Halcyon Rising: Breaking Ground, Book 1 is written by Stone Thomas with a running time of 5 hours and 20 minutes. Mr. Thomas has written a story in the LITRPG style. The main character is Arden. A young man who is an orphan on his own in the forest until fate crosses his path with a minor goddess in need of saving. Then offered a chance to be her head priest he takes it and becomes a skill miester unlocking peoples skills to level them up. He needs to recruit people to help protect Nola his goddess and build her city. He meets Vix as a bestkin builder, Cindra a negotitrix made of slime, and Mamba a half-elf gypsy snake charmer. The story holds the listener's attention while balancing the different threads of world building. The harem aspect is part of the story but the city building is and character enhancement plays a much larger part of the story.

The narration by Chris Graves was simply amazing in this fun new series. Mr. Graves gave another excellent vocal performance. Mr. Graves gave voices to the characters that were very memorable, especially Cindra with her smooth smoky alluring voice. When seeing Mr. Graves name attached to an audiobook I will now give the book a listen. Once again he did not disappoint his performances are consistently excellent. The publisher for this audiobook is Stone Thomas Productions. The production value is of the highest quality. I heard no problems during the entire performance. There were not any detectable flaws that I was able to hear during the entire performance. I did not hear any loops, breaks, or buzzing. The production was crisp and clear. The view from NPC’s When no one plays the game

So when a fantasy RPG isn’t being played what happens? It would seem this is what happens. Only high priests can level up characters. Only adventurers can afford to have their levels increased on a regular basis...for others it may be once or twice in their lives...what happens when the god of war decides he’s done playing nice and wages war against the gods themselves? The death of god and priests, the conversions of men to shadow warriors and the capture of woman all throughout. Who can stand against the god of war? Perhaps a fledgling goddess and her newly anointed high priest. They both have a new way of looking at things. A community formed, bonds forged, levels increased and of course the obligatory harem is created. War is waged, battle is joined and be ready for all that this entails. Great story and narration with a novel take on the RPG world. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator or publisher

A great Story

This is a great read. The characters are very well developed giving the story a good story flow. It is easy to follow. I have read the authors books and the narrator does this story proud. From what I can remember from reading the book nothing has been left out. I would recommend this book as well as the authors other books. Your time is well spent reading/listening to all the author's other books.

Very well done

I really love a good Litrpg and this book ticked all the boxes for me, In the way magic was handled and the world building aspect. The characters were brought to life by Chris Graves who once again does an excellent job in the performance. This is one of my favorite books in Litrpg and would recommend it to anyone even slightly interested in this type of book. I received a free copy of this audiobook in return for an unbiased review.

Great Harem

follows the MC can improve people trope with women throwing themselves at him...
however that is where the mediocrity stops.
the Story is greatly pace, well told with continually world building and character development.
I was hooked from the start and wanted more when the book ended...

Chris Graves does a wonderful job of giving the characters life and voices different enough that you are never in doubt of whom is speaking.

Interesting New Listen

Being a fan of LitRPG I found this quite light on the stats and harem style but a nice starter for those who don't want to listen to a narrator state 100 stats every few pages. The sex is mostly tame or suggestive and is easy enough to follow without impacting the story too much.
The storyline of a Temple waif made into a new Goddesses high priest due to a War God run amok and giving him the ability to control peoples stats as they cant do it themselves is quite a good premise.
The characters are nicely written and as such you find yourself content to follow their life, the pace could be a bit faster and I feel like maybe another 50 to 100 pages( 1 hour) of content would of helped the story along a bit.
Narration was quite clear ,concise and had good tones for easy listening as it suited the story's pace and tone.
Overall this is a good start for 1st audio and in think would work well for a 2nd so 4.5stars overall a few elements needed but overall quite good.
I requested this audio and have decided to leave my thoughts for you to read.

This is basically a D&D campaign in story format

If you are a big lover of D&D then you'll love this book! This is a fun and funny action/adventure themed book with some adult themes but nothing too blatant. The author does a good job with a variety of different voices as well.

Fantastic intro to a series

Loved nearly everything about this audio book. The narrator was fantastic, the story had that hook that gets you addicted and not want to put it off. Character development was great and I loved the method of progression.

I highly recommend this book!
