Story
The 26th century. Once considered clandestine, the Spartan-II program has now gone public. Tales of armored supersoldiers fending off thousands of Covenant attacks have become the stuff of legend. While the Master Chief defends a besieged Earth and the myriad factions of the Covenant continue their crusade to eliminate humanity, an ultra-secret cell of the Office of Naval Intelligence known as “Section Three” devises a plan to buy the UNSC vital time. It will need hundreds of willing soldiers, though - and one more Spartan - to get the job done.

Story
Launch once more into galaxy-spanning conflict and legendary heroism, shards of an ever-expanding journey where human and alien alike find their finest hours in facing their greatest challenges. These scattered stories span untold millennia, from the age of the ancient custodial race known as the Forerunners to the aftermath of the Covenant's bloody war against humanity and even the shocking events surrounding the resurrection of the mysterious Guardians.
Publisher's Summary
The New York Times best-seller - part of the expanded universe based on the award-winning video game series Halo!
It's 2535. It is the first, desperate days of the Human-Covenant War, and the United Nations Space Command has enacted “the Cole Protocol” to safeguard Earth and its inner colonies from discovery by its merciless alien foe. Many are called upon to rid the galaxy of lingering navigation data that could potentially reveal the location of Earth and ensure the destruction of humanity. Among those tasked with eliminating any trace of such dangerous information is Navy Lieutenant Jacob Keyes - now saddled with a top-secret mission by the Office of Naval Intelligence...one that will take him to a corner of the galaxy where nothing is as it seems.
Out beyond the Outer Colonies lies the planet Hesiod, a gas giant surrounded by a vast asteroid belt. As the Covenant continues to glass the human-occupied planets near Hesiod, many of the survivors, aided by a stronghold of human insurrectionists, are fleeing to the asteroids for refuge. They have transformed the tumbling satellites into a tenuous yet ingenious settlement known as the Rubble - and have come face-to-face with a Covenant settlement of Kig-Yar...yet somehow survived. News of this unlikely treaty has spread to the warring factions.
Luckily for the UNSC, this uneasy alliance is in the path of the Spartan Gray Team, a three-person renegade squad whose simple task is to wreak havoc from behind enemy lines in any way they see fit. But the Prophets have also sent their very best - an ambitious and ruthless Elite whose quest for nobility and rank is matched only by his brutality....

I want a refund, poor quality, okay story
Great look into Keyes' background and has some high points but it is far from my favorite. Spartan lore doesn't fit the Halo Culture but its not too far removed. The fight scenes were poor in story and in performance..with weird music... the recording skips out in places.. easily 4 times as other reviews state. Honestly the only redeeming qualities were Keyes and some cool ambient scene noise for the pelican scenes

Just as good as I remember it!
I read this book years ago when it first came out. Getting to listen to this story was an absolutely phenomenal experience. The Cole Protocol is by far my favorite book from the franchise. It has a little bit of everything in it. We get to see the inner machinations of the political turmoil in both the UNSC and the Covenant. We get some great action sequences throughout. Plus, we get to delve into some of our favorite characters lore such as Jacob Keyes and Thel Vadam’ee (aka The Arbiter). It’s such a fantastic story and it will always hold a special place in my heart. Hats off to you Tobias S. Buckell.

Great book
Great book and most importantly the Narator is good, but there are three occasions where there is a stutter and it appears to skip by 5-10 seconds. You don't appear to miss much. Environmental background sound effects are good but the dramatic background music got a tad annoying. Thankfully the Narator worked with it well so it was still easy to listen to.

Good Story
I’m making my way though the Halo books and like the 5 before this one had me hooked. It’s a good story and keeps you wondering what’s coming next but I have two issues with this book, the first is the number of chapters is really stupid, it’s a joke. And the second is the time line, I struggled to work out when this was happening in the Halo story lines.

Must reads for fans of Halo
The whole run of Halo books are must reads if you are a fan of the games. The deeper look into the story behind the games is incredible, especially as the books aren't centred around Master Chief John 117, you not only get stories from other Spartans, but other UNSC characters and from The Covenant.

Amazing
An incredible story start to finish, essential reading for any halo fan. It's always interesting to hear things built off of an already existing universe and add more character and growth to the already established characters that we love and some we despise. My only criticism is that the voices of some characters can sound similar so it can be confusing as to who's speaking, but as only one person narrated the story it's understandable and a great performance.

A step down in writing quality, but a great story.
Interesting story, lots of balls in the air to keep track of, although lulls of dragged out chapters that might make you fall off and forget what 'balls' are where. The pacing is a lot more consistent when the 'balls' come together. lots of consecutive "he said", "she said", "he replied", "she replied" that felt extremely lazy and hardly descriptive. Readers voice was well suited if only a little inconsistent with some characters.

Great Book, Great Narrator
I picked this book up on a whim, being a huge fan of the Halo Universe, and I was so surprised by just how good it was. Three different stories are told and all wrap neatly together, with fan favourite characters as well as new and very likeable ones. Most impressive was the narrator, who did an amazing job with different voices, completely immersing me in the story. The audiobook has quite good production too, with music and sound effects that thankfully only add to the experience. I highly recommend this.
