About this listen

The idea that you have to be rich to travel the world on your own yacht is so universal that it goes largely unquestioned. The ubiquitous images of rich men on super-yachts sipping Martinis only help cement this image. This book hopes to change all that.

Rick's recent appearance on Ben Fogle's New Lives in the Wild chronicled his budget lifestyle and adventures aboard Calypso, and introduced the idea of budget sailing to a whole new audience - an audience who may have never considered the possibility that such a dream could be made a reality, on such a small amount of money. This book is for them and for any experienced sailors who want to cast off the yoke of consumerist yachting and get back to what really matters at sea.

If you are not rich, but dream of seeing our beautiful world from the deck of your own boat, this book is packed full of practical and spiritual advice to help you cut through the endless marketing and identify what it is you truly need to become a modern sea gypsy and sail away on the greatest adventure of your life...

The best book detailing real life experience of sailing and the true cost of living on a boat. Definitely recommended for those looking to embark on a liveaboard life.

I really enjoyed this, despite the fact that I have no intentions of buying a boat. I learned a lot & it was quite funny, too. I found it to be a great summer read. If you’re serious about living in a boat, I’m sure this would be an invaluable resource. It could save you a lot of money, a lot of mistakes, or maybe even your life. The narrator was great.

Full of practical info

I really enjoyed this book, in-fact this book was the the catalyst for a big shift in how myself and my wife want to structure our future life in the ocean and what is truely important.

I found this book extremely factual with some light hearted comical delivery. I feel like I’ve gained so much from this book and it’s helped me see what makes up true sea worthiness, but this book went beyond that and truely redesigned my thought process towards money and attitude, and I wasn’t expecting that.

If you what a no bs approach to redesigning your life as a sea gypsy, this book is at the top of the list, a must have

Wow mind shifting!

The book I wish I picked up first learning about learning to live aboard.

I didn’t finish it. Got about three quarters of the way through. Not sure if he is pious or has a large chip on his shoulder, but the constant berating of any not following what he is doing got too much. Would have been a far better book without the chastising of others. If your argument can’t stand up without running others down perhaps it’s not much of an argument.

Better information out there

There may be some useful information in this book but it's hard to get past the self righteous and bitter diatribes.
The author's advice is condescending and god forbid you don't agree with his narrow minded view of how to cruise or what makes a safe boat. Even worse if you happen to have enough money to buy a nicer boat than he has or gear he can't afford. That apparently just makes you a poser. I've read many books on cruising and sailing in general but I've never read one where the author is so angry and bitter at everyone and anyone who is doing things differently than him. Judge for yourself but there are much more enjoyable books about sailing on a budget that are much better written, in my opinion.

Bitter Boor
