Story
Generations of dogs have been labeled training lemons for requiring actual motivation when all along they were perfectly normal. Numerous other completely and utterly normal dogs have been branded as canine misfits simply because they grew up to act like dogs. Barking, chewing, sniffing, licking, jumping up, and occasionally (just like people) having arguments are as normal and natural for dogs as wagging tails and burying bones.

Story
In Your Dog Is Your Mirror, dog trainer Kevin Behan proposes a radical new model for understanding canine behavior: a dog’s behavior and emotion, indeed its very cognition, are driven by our emotion. The dog doesn’t respond to its owner based on what the owner thinks, says, or does; it responds to what the owner feels. And in this way, dogs can actually put people back in touch with their own emotions.

Story
Living with a reactive dog can accidently create a reactive person and a cycle of negative experiences begin. There is an answer though! With understanding comes positive change. It might not have always been this way; perhaps walking once triggered positive emotion. Maybe we were happy until something specific happened; for example, we met someone with an unfriendly dog that attacked ours or made them really scared. We, too, could have felt scared, then that fear grew over the next few walks, until we felt it the moment we saw another dog in the distance.

Story
Across the world, we are killing too many dogs needlessly. In Australia, approximately 80 percent of all dogs that end up in shelters are there due to either dog-to-dog or dog-to-human reactivity. Sadly, this is not a problem exclusive to Australia. While this is a startling statistic, the sad truth is that the vast majority of dogs facing euthanasia in these shelters are highly salvageable and the solutions are often very simple to apply.

Most informative & concise book
- By Anonymous User on 31-01-2023
Publisher's Summary
Some dogs need a little help.
Some dogs are afraid, or excited, or reactive. Dogs that "don't listen" and "go crazy" don't live the lives we - or they - want.
Fired Up, Frantic, and Freaked Out can change that. Simple steps and an accessible, conversational tone from award-winning, internationally-known trainer Laura VanArendonk Baugh CPDT-KA KPACTP make calming the agitated dog not only possible, but pleasant.
In this book you'll learn how to achieve change in short, simple training sessions of a minute or less; maximize the effects of natural brain chemistry; know when to call in medical help; "clean up" unreliable behaviors in both overexcited sport dogs and pets at home; and recognize how fear, aggression, and excitement are variants of the same root problem.
The conversational tone is both informative and fun-very accessible, and it feels like the listener has a consulting trainer standing at her shoulder! Bring your dog from emotional to thoughtful, and enjoy a calmer, more enriched life with your best friend.

Thank you for making this available in audio!
Great information from an experienced dog trainer who gives examples from real life dogs. Includes good explanations of how to actually carry out the training process. The narrator must be a professional audiobook narrator, not a dog trainer, as she occasionally says something a little oddly (eg. Desensitisation is said as “desense-itation a few times.) It’s not a problem though, she has a nice voice and this was easy to listen to otherwise. I’m so glad this is available as an audiobook, and that I can bookmark/clip certain sections for a quick refresher “pep talk” if I need it.

the whole book is about free shaping mat training
content was too short and only focussed on one exercise mat training, frantic dogs will need more than this exercise to learn to settle down
