Pretty Accurate

This is an accurate and well researched work as its large number of appendix sources testify. The author's only hope for the book has been to open the eyes of those who are still under Castro's spell for pre 60's revolutionary romanticism.

So Far So Good

As one of the thousands of the Cuban non-political middle class who had to flee Cuba leaving everything behind including family, who not only experienced and suffered Castro's rise to power first hand, and whose family and himself personally knew quite a few of the persons which the book makes reference to; I, would not edit anything in this book.

Thats Amazing

This book details how he then immediately set about mismanaging Cuba's economy and exporting focus and revolutions throughout not just the Latin world but Africa as well. He began by sending focus to Nicaragua as early as 1959! And sent soldiers to the Congo and other area of Africa.

Grab It

This is an excellent biography of one of the 20th centuries most important guerrilla leaders. After you read this book you'll wish as many Cubans and Cuban-Americans do that Fidel had just taken his law degree and gotten involved with a legitimate nonviolent political party in Cuba.

This audiobook is awesome

This book truly takes the mask away and shows the real dictatorial and egocentric personality of Fidel Castro for the world to see, putting him up there with other dictators like Nicolae Ceaucescu, Joseph Stalin and Kim Jong il. All of the Cuban communist government's crimes and all the suffering of the Cuban people will be well known to the rest of the world after his communist regime is no more.

Impressive author

This is obviously a well-researched book. Sometimes a little "heavy" in depth and to extreme detail, however the detailed account of his younger years helps to understand the type of person he is! In power for over 30 years (longer than any contemporary leader) Quirk gives a good insight to how such a person strategically thinks and the effect of charisma.

Its Good

It is funny how some outsiders can go to the island and leave "experts", simply because they spoke to a few people. You have to live many years in Cuba to really know how oppressive Castro's regime has been.

Interesting Book

This book gives an accurate portrayal of Castro's life. As a Cuban who has suffered under his heavy hand, I have to say the author does a good job. Castro's regime after 40 years is as brutal as ever with numerous crackdown on political dissidents every day.

I Loved It

You can see development of childhood up through his dominance of power. Castro is one of the most interesting men in Latin America and whether you call him a dictator or a revolutionary this book covers him fairly. Highly recommend.

Great Book On History

This is the best biography of Fidel Castro out there. It is the most through and covers the most information. Although Guerrilla Prince is better written this book does provide more detailed information on all aspects of his life.

Well Done

The author, having known Castro and having been granted a number of interviews, tries hard and succeeds at being objective. Castro who had met great resistance from the old communist party of Cuba eventually accepted aid and advice from Soviet Russia.

Very Complete

A very thorough and objective analysis of Fidel Castro, however favorably or unfavorably one may view the subject as a person and public figure. Fidel was of course a very complicated individual with more than his share of inconsistencies, contradictions, and weaknesses, as well as strengths and accomplishments.

A Great Book

This is a great book! I do think it is up to the reader to analyze the information condensed in this book. They are all from outside perspectives. Still, I believe the book provides a good well rounded image of what Castro really is all about.

Good History Book

This book is a very well written analysis of Castro's regime as well as his personal methods of operation. It does an excellent job of helping to understand what makes him tick. However, it is extremely slanted toward the anti-Castro Miami Cuban community, and virtually ignores the black Cubans.

Oh So Good

This book gives you a view inside the political and military decision making of the Cuba communist regime. It is incredible to see how every major decision is controlled and dictated personally by Fidel Castro himself. The so-called Revolution is really nothing more than Fidel Castro's personal wishes and views

Very Detailed account

This bio focuses a bit more on gossipy stuff than one might like, but it hits the high points as well. The huge question that was simply neglected here was that, after Castro's failed attack on the Moncada Barracks in 1953 that began his legend as a revolutionary hero, most of the other participants were tortured and killed by the dictator Batista.

You could read this and feel that you have covered every relevant part of his life and then some. If you want to understand how Cuba was transformed into what it is today this is essential reading. Highly recommend.

Excellent

This is the best written biography of Fidel Castro. It covers almost all of his life focusing mostly on the political and military aspects. If you want to get a sense of society as a whole, I would recommend reading Fidel Castro by Quirk but otherwise this is an excellent start to Castro's life.

Interesting and Accessible

Interesting and accessible story of how Castro came to power. It would be helpful for any student of history, and especially helpful for those traveling to Cuba today. The book helped me to understand Cubans both young and old and how their outlook was shaped by the country's history.
