Královský písař Jiří Adam z Dobronína spolu se svým pomocníkem Petrem Korcem řeší zapeklitý případ na samém jihu Čech. Z cestování přes Šumavu mají v té době všichni strach, všude nekonečné hvozdy, kam snad ještě nevkročila lidská noha. Vesnic poskrovnu, jen tu a tam pár samot. A pořádných cest pár. Není proto divu, že královská města tu bohatnou z tučných cel a mýt a tak původně Jiří Adam z Dobronína na Šumavu cestuje kvůli sporu o solné clo mezi Vimperkem a Prachaticemi. Cestou přes rozbouřenou říčku ale málem přijdou o život a útočiště jim poskytnou na místním dvorci. Uprostřed noci však přijde Jiřího Adama navštívit panská dcerka Lucie a prosí o pomoc pro nespravedlivě odsouzeného...
