Brooks Johnson’s words to live by:

When returning to Licking Thicket, TN, for the first time in 10 years to reunite with your nosy neighbors, heartbroken ex-girlfriend, and matchmaking mama who never quite believed you were gay, it’s best to bring a fake boyfriend as backup.

Just don’t be surprised when your ex-girlfriend does the same. And when her incredibly hot fake boyfriend becomes the one island of calm in a sea of bovine-based insanity, it’s best to exercise caution, especially when he pushes you up against the rough barn wall to check you very thoroughly for splinters.

Just don’t be surprised if you fall head-over-hooves in love with him.

Don't take it too seriously

The story between Mal and Brooks is cute and full of great moments and wordplay. The side characters feel unique and are varied and fun. The only detracting factor is that Ava isn't very likable... Over and over it's stated how great of a friend she is - but she not only acts like a selfish jerk throughout most of the book, she's vindictive and self-centered in general. I kept trying to take it with a grain of salt - but I kept wanting something to wake her the hell up, and that never really happens- she just eventually looses interest in being actively being a jerk. Paul was adorable, if a little contrived.

What a great laugh!

For those who are tired of sitting in isolation - this book is a must-read. Warning: please advise your neighbours that you did not go insane, because, trust me, they might wanna call an ambulance. You will be laughing from the very beginning and till the end scene. 100 out of 5!

A sweet, contemporary, feel good, low angst listen!

This is the first book in the Licking Thicket series and can be read as a standalone.

Brooks is returning to his hometown for the first time in ten years and he isn't prepared to face his matchmaking mama, interfering neighbors and his ex girlfriend!
But it so happens that she isn't prepared to face him alone either.

Brooks isn't supposed to be attracted to his ex girlfriend's boyfriend, moreover fall head over heels for him.

Can Brooks survive his crazy family and maybe find something more along the way with Mal?

This was such a fun book to read.
It waz highly entertaining and so well written!!
The characters were likeable and enjoyable to read and the world building which was set in a cozy town with nosy neighbors who is up in everybody's business was super entertaining.
Another great read from this author duo.
Michael Dean's narration was entertaining and engaging as always.

Home is where the heart is ....eventually.

A mixed bag of humor, zany characters, tender romance,, falling in love ,finding one's place in the world, as well as in another's heart. All culminating in a very happy ending.
The wonderful mix of characters, each with their own story to tell kept FAKERS interesting, fast moving, and a delight to read.

Fun Small-Town Romance

I love me some small town romance! This one hits the spot. Two city boys who were originally from small towns.
Brooks is coming home after staying away for a decade after he disappointed his ex gf, his family and the small town but he doesn’t go home alone, he’s bringing his pretend & straight as a rod boyfriend, Paul, while Mal is reluctantly roped in to a visit because his best friend, Ava, is trying to over come the past trauma of being dumped by her high school sweetheart in front of the whole town.
I enjoyed listening to this audiobook. There were some laugh out loud moments. I’m not going to lie, I didn’t like Ava. She just seemed so self-centered. She might have redeemed herself towards the end.
The rest of the secondary characters are just as lovable as Brooks and Mal. The town sounded wonderful and the whole bovine theme was hilarious as well.
Michael Dean’s narration was as great as ever.

Loved this book

Great story and great character development. I also appreciate that it wasn’t full of sex.

So Funny and Sweet!

You can never go wrong with Lucy but add May and it becomes so much more. This was quintessential storytelling by two amazing writers and Michael Dean narrating such a perfect trio!

Why? No, seriously.... why?

Why even waste your time writing this story? There is a huge difference between funny and dumb.... this was beyond dumb. I’m not a participant in “woke” culture, but this was just offensive to the gay community. Very disappointed.

Per usual, Michael Dean’s performance was cringe-worthy! Who the heck talks like Mal? Why are we still giving him work just to ruin? My teeth hurt from listening to him do Ava and Mal. Just gross...

So many frustrating things

This book would have been heading towards a typical 3 star ok read which is what I usually give Lucy Lennox stories, with their small town characters and slightly cringeworthy humour. She seems to have a loyal following that leave over inflated positive reviews so it’s always difficult to really gauge how good a book of hers is.

However, this book had too many annoying things. Firstly, Ava. She was petty and shallow, and we were supposed to like her? The only “redeeming” feature the authors gave was that she was pretty. Paul is portrayed as overwhelmed by her beauty, and her liking being adored by him despite his “thinning hair”. Eughh. Actually, all the female characters weren’t likeable.

The whole premise seemed a bit awkward and unnecessary, and the drama of faking didn’t seem to be enough to base a story on.

Finally the drama at the end and Mal’s freak out, the things he said, and his decisions were just ridiculous. It’s like the authors just didn’t know how to make the ups and downs in this book. How it got resolved just didn’t work for me either. No grovelling.

The narrator isn’t ever my favourite. Nasal voice and annoying laugh, and awkward sounding humour.

This book left me with a curled lip and resentment that I wasted so many hours on it.

Just glorious....

Firstly, I want to say a big thank you for the two authors Lucy Lennox and May Archer. Ladies this book is like love and hope and family and friendship all wrapped up in sunshine and rainbows....
I defy anyone to not feel great after they have read this story, even more if they had the pleasure of listening to it from Michael Dean's voice. It is funny and warm and a real feel good story. I loved it all.
