Publisher's Summary

Contains books one and two of Exodus Ark, a thrilling new military sci-fi series from USA Today best-selling author J.N. Chaney.

Exodus Ark, book one

Kent-9464 was made for war.

But now, forsaken by those who created him, he has been relegated to head of security for a colony ship called Exodus Ark. It’s a one way trip to a new planet far away from everything he's ever known, and the trip is said to take hundreds of years.

The colony world is another Earth, a new beginning for mankind...and completely uninhabited. But when Kent is prematurely woken up from his stasis pod and told by the ship’s AI that they are under attack by an unknown alien threat, he must recall his years of training and once again become the man he used to be.

The battle for mankind's future is upon us...and it rests in the hands of one forgotten soldier.

Max Frontier, book two

The Exodus Ark has reached its destination. Kainos awaits, a beautiful planet ripe for colonization. Unfortunately, it isn’t as empty as the Rodon Corp suggested.

A mysterious signal draws Kent and his team to the surface where they encounter a race of intelligent life called the Volcuri. Their civilization is odd; a mixture of advanced technology and ancient ruins manned by a species who seem dangerous but aloof. The enemy who attacked the Ark is also present on Kainos...and their plans go far deeper than Kent could ever have imagined.

A fight is coming, not just for survival of their new home, but for the entire galaxy at large.

Great fun

Nonstop action with some good character development sprinkled in. I like where the series is headed and I'm excited for more.

JN Chaney succeeds yet again

This is a very different kind of story from Chaney's previous work. He's one of the most prolific scifi authors working today, no question, but this isn't like his usual stuff. In Exodus Ark, Chaney writes a character who, unlike his Renegade Star series, is not a wise cracking, sarcastic, energetic character, but rather a more subdued and reflective protagonist, trained to keep his mouth shut and play the part of a soldier. In the beginning, it seems as though Kent has very little personality, which might turn off initial readers, but after a while you begin to realize this is intentional; Kent is a shell of a person, built and trained to feel nothing. All of this changes during his time on the Exodus Ark and the invasion. It is here that Kent must deal with what it means to be human and embrace his emotions, all while defending his crewmates. He must reject his previous life and embrace the new one, like a rebirth. In the second book (which is included in this audiobook), we see his growth continue, and it becomes quite rewarding.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit and look forward to the rest. It seems there are six books planned in total, so I'll stick with it until the end. I've read all of the Renegade Star books, the Variant Saga books, and most of Chaney's cowrites, so I suppose you could call me a fan.

Got through most but did not finish

Two stars for the story might seem harsh, but given I put the book down with an hour and a half to go instead of finishing it, I couldn't give it more. I'm not just giving it a 1 for story because I did eventually get as far as I did and the book only really became unbearable for me towards the second half of book 2.

Book 1 was actually kind fun. It read like Resident Evil (the games) on a colony ship. The claustrophobic environment lends itself well to such a survival-horror story and while the ending didn't really satisfy, it was still enjoyable enough.

Book 2 is when everything went downhill for me. Nothing irritates me more than incompetent protagonists. Compound that irritation with the fact that this one is supposed to be some kind of super soldier. Honestly, if I were the corporation that bought this guy I'd ask for my money back.

The author does that thing where the plot is leading in a very obvious direction, but the cast is somehow ignorant of the fact - not even a smidge of deductive reasoning is used to figure anything out. Just keep moving forward like a mindless group of idiots, make some vague notions that 'something is tickling the back of their minds' but ignore that intuition entirely and carry on. It drags on for so long that when the reveal comes, it's past ridiculous, and when they needed it spelled out further, it just became annoying.

There's loads of other really annoying things like this I'd rather not get into further just because the review will just become more ranty than it already is.

Ultimately, I just ended up incredibly disappointed. Ironically, the author is doing the cliche thing of the genetically enhanced supersoldier getting his emotions back and all I can think about is 'No, stay on the meds! I preferred you that way!'

Jeffery F#%^* Kafer is Amazing.

This new series is outstanding story line. Characters are true in how we think and would react.
Writing this story must have been a lot fun to write. Because it shows.

Must own audiobook!!

Immensely enjoyable

I love me some JN Chaney. This was a great listen and the narrator knocked it out of the park. I've listened to the Messenger series, which Kafer also narrates, so I knew he would do a good job here. Can't wait for the next book. Thank you for the fun time! Go Kent!
