AWESOME!!!!

Exit Strategy by Colleen Cross is so much more than I expected. I was immediately pulled into this book featuring Katerina Carter. I was really intrigued with the stock trades and diamonds, without divulging too many details. The author wrote financial crimes so realistically, its scary. I loved the twists and non-stop action. The imagery is fantastic! I was so surprised and satisfied with the ending! I cannot recommend this book enough. Petrea Burchard performed this book flawlessly. She is so easy to listen to and adds the right emotions to the scene. Her distinguishable voices for the various characters is also great. I can't wait to listen to the next book in the series. This book is a standalone listen and the start of a new series.

Forensic Accounting

Narrator Petrea Burchard always comes through with a complete cast of characters, male and female, to put forth an engaging play. In this she is assisted by author Colleen Cross' clever tale of terrorism, diamond smuggling, banking, murder, and fraud. I've read several of the author's paranormal tales (crime-solving witches) which were cozies; RCMP involvement (why, yes, this is a Canadian story) introduces more of a procedural bent to this thriller. But it is the antics of our hapless heroine, an accomplished accountant on the edge of bankruptcy, which provide counterpoint to the dastardly deeds of the villains. While of a more serious bent, flashes of humor cannot be suppressed and there is much to be loved as Kat conquers all.

Who Knew Forensic Accounting Could be So Involved

I have to say, it took me a few minutes to start getting into this book, but I am so glad that I kept on listening because I feel like I actually learn several new facts/tid bits about the diamond trading, as well as shorting the stocks-of which I looked up and read on both avenues after listening to this book-so thank you for teaching me something new.

The main character Kat, is hired to do some forensics accounting for Liberty Holdings with the company suspects it's CFO, Paul Byrant of embellishing funds. Once Kat starts getting too close and asking "too many questions" she is let go from her job from doing their tracing of the funds. However, she continues to investigate on her own, which almost cost her her own life in the process and also the life of her beloved cat.

My favorite character by far is Uncle Harry.....loved his jovial spirit and him going through the trash after scolding Kat is humorous.

This is my first book that I have had the pleasure of listening to Petrea Burchard and she did a phenomenal job!!

Follow the Money

greed, embezzling, diamonds, murder, suspense *****

Follow the money.
Never get complacent.
Blood diamonds are cursed.
Forensic accounting is waaaay above my pay grade, and I wouldn't even know how to follow the kind of money trail that's in this book. But reading it is a different story, the suspense just kept building! Even when I realized that I was in over my head, I just couldn't stop and research like I usually do because I just couldn't put it down! A real thrill ride.
The narrator extraordinaire is Petrea Burchard and she adds to everything.

Pretty Good Thriller

Ok, I'm an accountant so this kind of intrigued me. Overall, it was not bad, but it wasn't great. Very cliched and predictable.

$5 Billion has disappeared from Liberty Holdings and the CFO is the prime suspect, since he is missing. Kat is hired by Liberty as a Forensic Accountant to follow the money trail, find the money and bring it back to Liberty. As she begins her investigation, we learn that Kat is on the verge of bankruptcy, living in her office, and hoping that Liberty will be the payday she needs to get the creditors off her back and get her new career as a forensic accountant off the ground. Awkward moment that would not be allowed - Kat's uncle is a stockholder. Kat would not be hired for this kind of work since she is related to a stockholder who has a vested interest in the company.

Anyway, Kat's best friend Jace, finds out about her situation and lets her stay at the house they bought together, that is not in any shape to really be lived in. As Kat begins to piece together what happened with the money, she finds an ex-employee murdered, comes back to the house only to find her cat with it's throat slit and a note with the word "Kat" - obviously meant for her. Throw in cops with questionable motives, Kat's crazy uncle, a potential romance that becomes a non-starter, blood diamonds and a South American drug cartel, kidnappings, faked deaths, and the kitchen sink.

Kat never really solves anything, but pieces together bits she finds out along the way. Doesn't really speak well for her as a forensic accountant. The narration by Petrea Burchard is not great. Most of the time she sounds like a breathy femme fatale trying to seduce someone. She even does this as a male cop, one that we are supposed to think is on the take, but instead of sounding like he is mean, he sounds like a deep voiced woman trying to seduce someone!

Unless I see some better reviews and a different narrator for book 2, this will be my last one.

Good story. Terrible heroine.

The story in Exit strategy is excellent but the un- reconcilable qualities of the main character ruined it for me. I think the author should have found a different way to roll out the situations in the story then by making an otherwise intelligent woman to be too incredibly stupid. I wanted to strangle her and it took all my patience to finish this book as it the actions of the main character were often unbelievable.

Exit Strategy

This is really a fun edge of your seat kind of book. In the opening of the book your heart will go out to the young lady, with her not so full proof plan. But the real hero of the story is Katerina and her failing business. She is such a great character and I love her ex-boyfriend/business partner too. An incident later in the story really has me wondering who she can really trust though. The story is fun, moves at a great pace and keeps you on your toes and not wanting to put it down. Nice job on the narration.

A really great read

A whirlwind story of murder, betrayal, underhand dealings, diamonds and a mafia boss. When Forensic Accountant Katerina Carter is hired to find a missing 5 billion dollars she uncovers layer upon layer of deception and soon realises that she can trust no one. A really great read with excellent narration by Petrea Burchard

Intricate and Intriguing Mystery

Exit Strategy is my first book by Author Colleen Cross. Although I enjoyed the storyline it did get a bit technical at times but the way it was written and narrated I was able to understand the premise of forensic accounting and the authenticity of the diamonds, were they really from Liberty's mine?

Katerina Carter is hired by Susan Sullivan of Liberty Holdings to investigate the sudden disappearance of Paul Byrant and $5 billion which disappeared at the same time. After this obvious coincidence, there are two unexpected murders but it takes Kat to connect the dots, on the other hand, Officer Platt of the Vancouver police department seems to be floundering.

The story involves bribery, murder, money laundering, conflict diamonds, mobsters and an international criminal/terrorist. All of this activity doesn't seem to stop Kat from her investigation. Although she has been fired by Liberty, survived a murder attempt and is now deeper in debt than ever, she continues to try to solve the case without an apparent payout or recognition of any kind in sight.

Kat is an intelligent woman but despite all the warnings, the brutal slaying of her cat and the attempt on her life she takes no precautions and goes on an early morning jog along an isolated path and then gets kidnapped. I found that really hard to swallow.

The book is beautifully narrated, I had attempted to read this book some time ago but gave up, I found that I had no trouble taking in the story and fully understanding it when I listened to it. I'm so glad I did because it was definitely worth my time.

I was given a copy of this audiobook as a gift and am voluntarily writing my review.

Interesting story

Very interesting story, a twist on the murder mystery with money and diamonds mixed it. ( what more could a girl want aha) great story with a lot of detailing mixed it about diamond mining. Has a couple of dry moments in the explanations but these are needed to advance the storyline. I'd recommend this book as a great lazy listen

Brilliant legal thriller

Legal thrillers have never been high on my listening list, but this very one may just change that,I really enjoyed this one.
From the very beginning the opening line ,the action came thick and fast, from then it just got better and better.
I found Katerina, believable and a real tryer, I loved all the close relationships, which proves there is nothing more important than family, specially in such a story.
I found the plot well written and twisty and turny, just when i thought I had a handle on the story, another twist would hit from nowhere, I enjoyed every min of it.
Every character whether a main player or minor role, I honestly loved the bad guys as much as the good.
What started life as a simple fraud case soon grew so many arms and legs,it turned into a big brilliant legal thriller spider.
The narrator for this rollercoaster was, Petrea Burchard, another new name in a increasingly long list of new and brilliant narrators I've heard since starting this blog, she does an excellent job, good pace and timing, wonderful accents, one to keep an ear out for.
If legal thrillers are your thing, 0r like me you are fairly new to the genre this would be a good place to start, it has action, suspense and action and a class story as well.

A very suspenseful thriller

Who'd have thought a story that is mostly about the mining and economics of diamonds could be so thrilling. Yet Colleen Cross pulls it off. I knew a little about blood diamonds (mainly from watching a movie and researching afterwards) but not a great deal.
This book pulls together some quite extensive financial accounting details of the diamond trade, mob bosses, murder, kidnapping and makes a breathtaking chase against time. I was gripped by Katerina's investigation (even the numbers scenes where done with a nice pace) and twists and turns of the action. A very clever, interesting and well-written tale.
The audio was excellent, by Petrea Burchard, with great voices delineating characters, and keeping the pace of the story, it flowed in my ears, and listened to this in pretty much one sitting.
Overall a cracking first book, in a series, that I most certainly will carry on reading or listening to.

Loved it!

I listened to this book via Audible, and really enjoyed it! The forensic accountant angle for a protagonist is a new and unusual one for me, but one that worked well. Katerina (Kat) Carter is struggling to keep her Practice – and her life – afloat, when she’s hired by Liberty Diamonds following a $5 billion dollar embezzlement. But the prologue showing a daughter trying to betray her arms-dealing gangster of a father gives us a steer that there’s much more going on here.

Kat is hired by the CEO to try and track down the missing funds, but soon uncovers clues to something much bigger going on. With her foolish uncle having invested much more than he can afford into Liberty Diamonds, and her own livelihood hanging in the balance, there’s a lot at stake.

Kat Carter is an interesting choice of protagonist, smart, yet vulnerable, but with a dogged determination that drives her to uncover the truth, even as the bodies start mounting up, and it’s clear that her own life is in grave danger.
Great characters, great story and great narration (even though I struggled not to liken Uncle Harry’s voice to that of Marge Simpson!)

Good listen

A slow build up storyline with complex characters that I listened to in 2 sittings. A forensic accountant finds herself in the middle of several murders and a corrupt diamond company. I’d be interested in seeing what happens to Katerina (I found the detective a bit irritating- if you listen to this book you might see (or should that be hear?) what I mean). 4 out of 5 stars

A well researched story

Listened to this one on audible. I was familiar with Colleen Cross’s writing as I’d also listened to one of her Westwick Witches’ series too. The narration across the two was fairly similar and I actually liked the narration more in this book. Although, I did keep linking voices in this one, to that book.

An intriguing tale of corporate fraud with twists a plenty. Never knew there was such a thing as forensic accountants and there was a lot of research into the diamond trade illicit and licit within this novel. I learnt a lot.

My gauge for a good series, is whether I’d read or listen to another. Would I? Yes, I would. Rather liked Kat’s tenacity and her need to have justice served. Pay attention, as there is a huge amount of detail that is integral to the story.
