Altmışlı yıllarda Batı Avrupa ve ABD gençliği tarafından en yaygın okunan ve tartışılan yazarlardan biridir Halil Cibran ve 1974'da "Ermiş"in Aytunç Altındal tarafından Türkçe'ye kazandırılmasıyla ülkemizde de tanınmaya başladı ve ilgi gördü. Yaşadığı günlerde kitapları egemenlerce tehlikeli, ihtilalci ve gençlik zehirleyici bulunarak meydanlarda yakılmış, kendisi de Manoit Kilisesi'nce aforoz edilmiştir. Fakat Cibran inançlarından ödün vermez ve şöyle der:
"Bunlar ve diğer öğretilerden söz edişim nedeniyledir ki cezaya çarptırılıp, sürgüne gönderildim ve kilise tarafından aforoz edildim... geçirdiğim yıllarda hiçbir pişmanlığa kapılmış değilim. Gerçek'i arayıp da onu insanlara açıklayan herkes acı çekmeye mahkumdur."
