Story
If you're tired of being at war with your body, then this book is for you. We've been convinced that happiness is something that only comes once we hit that goal weight, get those washboard abs, shrink ourselves down and change every part of ourselves. We believe that our bodies are the problem, but this is not true. It’s how we’ve been taught to see our bodies that’s the problem.... It's time for us all to stop believing the lies we've been fed about what it means to be beautiful and take our power back.

Story
Mainstream health science has let you down. Weight loss is not the key to health, diet and exercise are not effective weight-loss strategies, and fatness is not a death sentence. Body Respect debunks common myths about weight, including the misconceptions that BMI can accurately measure health, that fatness necessarily leads to disease, and that dieting will improve health. The authors also help make sense of how poverty and oppression - such as racism, homophobia, and classism - affect life opportunity, self-worth, and even influence metabolism.

Story
We are becoming more and more obsessed with being thin...as we get fatter and fatter! The craziest part is that most weight loss 'solutions' are actually part of the problem. Diet and exercise programs fail 97% of people in the long-term, resulting in short term weight loss, medium term regain and long-term gain approximately 10 to 15% above starting weight. Scientists have known this reality for decades - the entire diet industry is based on it - yet we keep on falling for promises of fast, easy, permanent weight loss.

Story
The anti-diet bible that calls time’s up to poisonous beliefs about food, weight and worth. Dieting doesn't work. Not long term. In fact, our bodies are hardwired against it. But each time our diets fail, instead of considering that maybe our ridiculously low-carb diet is the problem, we wonder what’s wrong with us. But it’s time we called a spade a spade: Constantly trying to eat the smallest amount possible is a miserable way to live, and it isn’t even working. So f*ck it.

Making a difference
This story is one that has needed to be told and I'm so thankful for. Gaining confidence in myself has been a long journey and now I finally have hope for the future of mental health in children that are exposed to too much media focused on appearance. This movement has the possibility to make the change. Thank you Taryn for making this happen.
I really appreciate that you made your story into an audiobook as I have difficulty reading. This means it will also reach others that can't make use of the book. You're a wonderful speaker!

A shallow look at a real issue
I tried to like this, really I did. My first problem with this book came at the outset when the author waxed lyrical about the movement she “founded”. Say what? Body positivity has been around for a long, long time and a lot of thinkers have been writing about it. Similarly, a lot of academics have dedicated their whole careers to body image studies. Rebranding body positivity as “embrace” or whatever you want to call it does not mean you invented anything. Secondly, the constant references to social media were excruciating. At one point - still in the introductory bit I think - the author/narrator tells us about a fabulous person, whose main claim to fabulousness is the fact she has X number of Instagram followers and if we don’t already, we should follow her on social media immediately. As if the emphasis on social media and its artificial reality isn’t a major contributor to body image problems! The book had a shallow, gushing quality with the author constantly reminding us about her amazing journey to social media stardom and I just can’t believe it, and it all began at my kitchen table, but I’ve done something amazing! You’ve invented a catchy tag line to promote ideas you didn’t come up with. I really did try to get into it but it wasn’t for me. I’m clearly in the minority however so maybe it will do some good with helping others get interested in body image the wealth of great research out there on the subject.

The content is great, the narration I didn’t enjoy
I love taryn and the work she has done. I loved her documentary and it’s such a powerful message. But I just couldn’t get past the first few chapters as the way it was read was monotonous and had no pauses between sentences. Overall un-engaging and off-putting narration. Once again I love taryn and her work, it’s purely the narration that let this audiobook down. Sorry taryn.
