Publisher's Summary

Explore the captivating history of early modern Europe.

The beginning of modern Europe was a time of confusion, excitement, suspicion, hope, despair, and ideas. It was a time of a lot of change spread out over just a few hundred years, but the end result was a completely different world than the one that had come before it.

This audiobook includes details of the transition from the Middle Ages to the early modern era, where Europe saw significant shifts across the continent in phases. The years following the Thirty Years' War until the 1800s are treated as a transition between the early and current modern eras. The unrest that started at the end of the Middle Ages exploded following the Thirty Years’ War, and it marked the change to many of the thought processes widely accepted as true today.

In Early Modern Europe: A Captivating Guide to a Period in European History with Events Such as the Thirty Years War and the Salem Witch Hunts and Political Powers Such as England and the Ottoman Empire, you will discover topics such as:

  • The world leading to the modern era
  • The European power dynamic
  • The age of discovery
  • Sanctioned piracy - ruling the high seas
  • Religious corruption and upheaval

  • The Thirty Years’ War
  • Witch hunts - including the infamous Salem Witch Trials
  • The Italian Renaissance
  • Johannes Gutenberg - one invention to change the world

informative book

Which is to say it is a useful and informative book. The political and military struggles of the period are laid out in a clear narrative, particularly the rise and decline of the Carolingian empire, and there is plenty of information to assist in building a better sense of the period.

This is so dense with ideas and information

The greatest change was the development of a Christian ideology as a way to transmit culture and ultimately political reach.Recommended for all serious students of history. It is a wonderful read and beautifully written.

Strong narrative

A good narrative history of the transition from late antiquity to the medieval. I enjoyed the intelligent scepticism about the available written sources and the way of analysed historical actors in terms of the problems actually facing them (rather than some teleological notion of how they "should" have acted or be seen to have acted).

the dark ages: academic, accessible, dense

The audiobook starts with the sudden deterioration of the Early Modern Europe, with a detailed portrayal of the culture, the military challenges faced, and an extended analysis of the collapse.

This is one of the best history books

This is one of the best survey histories that I have ever read: while comprehensive, it neither gets bogged down in obscure scholarly debates nor over-simplifies controversies on sources or interpretation for lay readers.

Wonderful book

The author starts with conditions in Europe at the time of the discovery of the New World, and how it engendered a spirit of exploration and possibility among Europeans.

Easy to understand

I found some revelations - for example, I always thought the Magna Carta was about the rights of the common man, but it was really more of a transfer of power from the king to local nobles.

Perfect book

the author follows different waves of change that ran through that whole period. I think this style makes it easier to see patterns of history than by looking at unrelated events interspersed on a timeline.

Love it

This book covers the period roughly from 1400 to the early 1700s, but one thing I enjoyed was that rather than recounting events in chronological order,

It is good to be able to keep straight

This book is very concise and does not drag out any explanation of a topic. I learned more in a very short period of time than I ever imagined possible.

Complete and informative

A detailed yet readable history of a time often ignored. From the 'fall' of Rome to the Crusades, crucial systems of religion, government and agriculture were formed amid the chaos of barbarian invasions and insurgent Islam.

Useful and basic and a standalone book

The detail with which he treats the nature of his historiographical sources really only makes sense, if one assumes the reader will eventually venture more deeply in certain areas.
