About this listen

The entire best-selling Dungeon World series is now together in one volume!

This Dungeon World Series Box Set includes:

Dungeon World, Books 1-5
Bonus short story

In a world five times larger than Earth, dungeons and their Dungeon Cores have become the top of the food chain.

Millions of dungeons inhabit the planet, utilizing the Human people as a source of much-needed Mana to facilitate their own growth; in turn, the humans delve into the dungeons to acquire their own power in the form of Essence, which allows them to develop and enhance themselves in a multitude of different ways. It is a symbiotic relationship that has lasted thousands of years and has brought about a measure of peace.

Far in the northern wilds where no Humans (and therefore - no dungeons) regularly frequent, a young man is left alone when his parents are suddenly murdered. Now, without friends, family, supplies, or even much knowledge of the wider world, Fredwynklemossering embarks on a journey to discover who - or what - killed his parents. Along the way, however, he learns more than he bargained for, including his seemingly impossible status as a Dungeon Core/Human hybrid. With that knowledge comes a shift in his objective; revenge against those who wronged him turns out to pale in comparison to the dangers the Humans will face in the future.

Will Fred be able to successfully straddle the line between the Human and Dungeon Core worlds? Unfortunately, he’ll have to, or else the entire Dungeon World may be doomed....

Contains 564,000 words, LitRPG/GameLit elements such as statistics and leveling, as well as dungeon construction and defense. No harems and no profanity.

Very sad that this adventure is over. It was a great story that didn’t drag out unnecessarily.

Outstanding

the story is told like your sitting at a table with someone talking at you going over their experiences

inculding situations where the character gets distracted and goes off topic and then says "any way"

this isnt while they are talking but the inbetween sections of writing where its character thoughts and their actions / events

one situation had a character do something and then after the action it went, obviously she did it for x reason

this was mostly over book 1 and half way through book 2 so I can only assume it gets better

my issue isnt this style of writing but how much it pulls me out of the story and how it feels like the author is just trying to play things super safe

which sucks because the best part of the story was the start where it left you guessing about a thing and then you figure it out before its hammered home to you 1000 times incase you missed it

3 stars instead of 2 because they made it easy to skip stat read outs so your time at least is respected

voice actor did a good job

(this is not a bad story just not as good as I hope it would be)

interesting story poor bad delivery

As noted in a previous review the story (or at least the premise behind it) is ok in itself it but was let down by the execution.

At times, the story somehow feels like it's both dragged out yet simultaneously rushed, with 'conflicts with other dungeon cores/defenders' and 'relationships with people' generally serving as the dividing line between the two states. Without going into too much detail, I would broadly summarise the writing for each as having the following themes:

1) Conflicts with cores/defenders: (from the MCs perspective) 'Through my most recent experience/tribulation, I have undergone existential change and just developed this extraordinary new power, ability or both ... but I can't help here/using it will inevitably cause more issues/etc. Sorry guys, this one's up to you'.

2) Relationships with people (attitudes towards MC): 'Regardless of recent events or my previous attitude towards you, you are just tops MC 👍'.

I also don't think I have ever come across another book/series that dedicates as much as much time to stats (or so frequently finds a reason to segue into them) as this one does. This is particularly disruptive to immersion when MC's main companions join the party. Fortunately the author (or producer) had the good foresight to separate stat sections into dedicated chapters.

Again, although the above sounds all negative, the story itself is not bad. While I personally would not recommend it based on my preferences, I also don't regret giving it a go and wouldn't try to dissuade anyone else from doing so either.
