Publisher's Summary

Practical advice and hopeful encouragement for the tough yet rewarding transition to parenting grown kids.

If you have an adult child, you know that parenting doesn't stop when a child reaches the age of 18. In many ways, it gets more complicated. Both your heart and your head are as involved as ever, whether your child lives under your roof or rarely stays in contact.

In Doing Life with Your Adult Children, parenting expert Jim Burns helps you navigate one of the richest and most challenging seasons of parenting. Speaking from his own personal and professional experience, Burns offers practical answers to questions such as these:

  • Is it okay to give advice to my grown child?
  • What's the difference between enabling and helping?
  • What boundaries should I have if my child moves back home?
  • What do I do when my child doesn't seem to be maturing into adulthood?
  • How do I relate to my grown child's significant other?
  • What does it mean to have healthy financial boundaries?
  • How can I support my grown children when I don't support their values?

Including positive principles on bringing kids back to faith, ideas on how to leave a legacy as a grandparent, and encouragement for every changing season, Doing Life with Your Adult Children is a unique book on your changing role in a calling that never ends.

Not recommend

This book has too many references to biblical verses and church references. Written for people living in the 50s

can be summarized in one sentence

it will be nice if the author also discussed how parents should support adult children with a troubled childhood or with emotional disturbances. the book offers some good tips but most are superficial.

Awesome book I wish I had heard it sooner

this book not only help me deal with my adult child but also help me deal with my in-laws and taught me that it’s not about me
that I should bite my tongue and not always express my non-solicited opinion...
Humbling but wise advice

Some good points but...

Overall ok, with some good solid advice. However, very, very religious. Perfect for parents who are struggling with their children’s decision to leave the church or walk away from religion in general. If you prefer a less religious approach, I recommend I’m Still your Mother by Dr Jane Adams.

Listening to this book a second time!

Loved this book. Reminded me what I'm doing right, and what I need to improve. Not many books have been written about living life with grown kids under the same roof. Glad I stumbled across this one.

Never dreamed I’d need this book

I bought this book because it popped up on my Facebook feed. At that time I actually was having some relationship issues with my adult children and their spouses. Doing life with your adult children: keep your mouth shut and the welcome mat out. That was exactly what I needed to hear. I probably didn’t even need to read the book. But I am so glad I did. I feel confident that this next phase of life is going to be full of joy and grace as we use the advice from this book. Every parent of adult children no matter how old should get this book.

Relevant and encouraging

As the mom of 3 adult daughters this book was very encouraging. I've felt a lot of the emotions Jim shared from other parents. Knowing there are other parents who've traveled this road and are struggling with the same things is incredibly gratifying. I'm not alone! The real-life stories and struggles showed Jim has done his research and KNOWS this phase of life. I highly recommend it to any parent wanting to release their kids to adulthood and themselves to peace as a parent.

Must read! And well before your kids reach adulthood!

Outstanding insights and advice. Great use of specific examples that most parents will relate to.

I wish I'd known these practical tips earlier. I have 4 young adult sons and have been stumbling around doing life with them. Ive got very discouraged but now I know how to go through this stage with more confidence. Thank you!
