Publisher's Summary

Has separation anxiety, fear of abandonment, self-harm, and emotional instability prevented you from experiencing what should have been the typical life of a "normal" person?

Have negative thoughts assaulted you on every side, taking control, and proving stubbornly resistant to all attempts to drive them away? Have you had emotions that sometimes you can't even name?

Anger, fear, sadness and shame are notoriously difficult emotions to manage as nature has forged their purpose purely to protect us. Sometimes trauma can interfere with your ability to regulate your emotions, amplifying them and generating devastating effects for yourself and for others.

If you live with a Borderline Disorder, you will likely have been prey to intense and fluctuating emotions, struggling every day with troubling thoughts and behavior; finding difficulties being understood by others and being troubled in your relationships.

Borderline Personality Disorders are officially recognized as DSM 5 and still remain a stigma, fueled by ignorance and misinformation that causes unnecessary and undeserved shame and isolation for its victims.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy, has rapidly become one of the most popular and most effective treatments for the range of mental health conditions that are rooted in out-of-control emotions.

DBT was created for the treatment of individuals struggling with suicidal thoughts, but has now matured into a treatment for a whole range of other conditions that involve dysfunctional emotional regulation. It is currently considered the "gold standard" for Borderline Personality Disorders and has even been used in the treatment of substance abuse and eating disorders.

I recommend that you listen to this audiobook if, in the last three months, you have found yourself overpowered by:

  • Anxiety, depression, and anger, often for reasons that others find difficult to understand or that they consider futile.
  • Intense or uncontrollable emotional explosions.
  • Instability in interpersonal relationships and self-esteem.
  • Concerns about abandonment.
  • Feeling desperately misunderstood.
  • Feelings of helplessness and despair.
  • Practices of self-harm and notions of suicide.
  • Doubts about yourself and your sanity.
  • And many others...

Do the following symptoms sound familiar for you?

You should address these issues by:

  • Listening to those who understand this problem and have experienced the dynamics just listed.
  • Informing yourself: read articles, watch videos, and access people who have the expertise to alleviate the destructive damage that emotional storms can create.

This audiobook will most likely not be "the complete cure" for all your problems. But i guarantee that if you listen and listen again every single section carefully, absorb all the advice and apply the techniques provided by this manual, you will immediately feel a sensation of relief, and see noticeable improvements in every aspect of your life as the days progress.

Managing your emotions more constructively

It has helped me be more mindful even though emotions still take over from time to time. However, understanding the 'why' helps in controlling emotional bad habits.

Not what I was expecting

I was expecting more in-depth work to be done. Not just romantic sizing techniques. There are better books out there audible just doesn't have them.

Unprofessional narration

I was surprised at how unprofessional the narration was for this book. There were actually moments where he makes mistakes in the narration as well, which was totally distracting. The content is good. A nice overview of DBT and how it can actually help a patient.

Too monotone

I could not not make it through 10 min of this monotonous narration. Most certainly will not recommend to clients and will be returning

Great advice for resolving everyday conflicts!

Fantastic guide for couples with different emotional styles. Dont let the title turn you off - it is intended for couples with all kinds of conflict, not for issues of abuse/violence. Both my spouse and I found the suggestions extremely helpful for improving our communication.

Wow very useful

I am searching for a CD of this book to play in the car system. DOES A CD NOT EXIST, IS IT NOT AVAILABLE ANYWHERE? I am desperately wanting a copy for a family member who would benefit from this book very much.

Excellent for Couples to Read Together!

I HIGHLY recommend this book to ALL couples, whether or not you believe that your relationship is full of conflict. If it isn't, it will help you both to learn the DBT Skills from the four modules (Core Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, Interpersonal Effectiveness, & Distress Tolerance). By learning these skills, it will contribute to PREVENTING your relationship from becoming conflicting.

Must read for couples in crisis

As a therapist, I am always looking for books that clients can use. This is an excellent book for helping clients relate to each other in a more effective way. The home work at the end of each chapter offers ways in which to practice concepts presented. Highly recommend this book.

Research based self help"

This book is a good read for those interested in the psychology of emotions and are willing to examine themselves while reading it. Part psychology text, part self help, it's both and neither at the same time...

Easy to read, implement, and help

I like the fact that the book takes you step by step to a conflict resolution process. I also like that it helps to understand one self behavior about why we react the way we react whenever we are confronted with conflict. The fly or fight behavior.

Skip therapy and use this book.

Very practical book. Our therapist recommended it.
We could have saved a lot of money had we gotten this book and not gone to therapy !

Awesome

One of the best books I have read on the BPD subject but does not say it is for that so one can share it with partner. Develops Dielectical Behavior ideas and especially Mindfulness.

Learned a lot!

I will have to read sections again as I make progress. The exercises are difficult, but worth the effort & pain. If you do it, you will change! Your partner may not, but it won't bring you down emotionally.

Analytically oriented help for conflict-prone coup

The book has open-ended exercises that are useful if a bit vague, precise examples, and very good flow from chapter to chapter, start to finish. Even the layout is accessible with short measured segments that allow the reader to pause and reflect frequently.
