THE ISLES OF SCILLY MYSTERIES # 5

When a young child goes missing on the Isles of Scilly, the community rushes to help DI Ben Kitto and his team with the search. Her twin brother, Ethan, was there when she was taken. But the shocking events of her disappearance have rendered him mute.

Another person on the island knows exactly where the girl is. Someone with a deep-seated anger for Jade's family. To find the truth, Kitto must investigate the lives of the people he has known all of his life. People he trusts and respects. And he must do it quickly—because it isn't long until a body is found....

Inspiring landscape and dog

i love these "locked island" mysteries, largely because the Scilly island setting is so evocative. The story is engrossing enough and well read -- and yet on reflection, the protagonist Ben Kitto always seems a bit scattergun in his approach, accusing half the population of murder in rapid succession rather than building an inquiry. The idea is that he is a straightforward type, attuned to the ways of the islanders. If he lacks emotional depth and complexity, the atmospheric environment (and the dog, Shadow) more than makes up for his shortcomings.

FAREWELL BEN KITTO

Awkward use of tense was off putting. The mystery was well developed but the resolution wasn’t believable.
I am not tempted to return to the Scilly Isles.
