Skyggens lærling Will og pigen Evanlyn er på vej til Skandia som fanger på den frygtindgydende kaptajn Eraks ulveskib. Halt har svoret at ville befri Will, og han vil gøre hvad som helst for at holde sit løfte - endog trodse sin egen konge. Ridderlærlingen Horace slutter sig til ham på hans rejse op gennem Gallica mod Skandia. Undervejs bliver de konstant udfordret af enlige riddere, som ikke er andet end en flok tyvagtige banditter.
