Publisher's Summary

At the bleeding edge of space....

In the 35th century, mankind has colonized vast reaches of space, yet war remains constant as galactic governments and interstellar corporations fight for control of resource-rich planets and lucrative interstellar trade routes. And if centuries of war has taught man one thing, it's that planets are valuable and lives are cheap.

In a desperate attempt to escape his current life, Mark Rizer drops out of his prestigious university and enlists in the elite Marines of the United Systems Alliance defense forces. It's a decision that will take him across the galaxy, first to endure a sadistic boot camp designed to transform him into a ruthless killing machine, and then to join the ranks of the hardened Marines of Murder Company.

Deployed to Verdant, a remote jungle moon at the edge of Alliance space, Mark finds himself fighting a ghostly enemy in an unending conflict where victories are measured in body counts and death is the only ticket home. The daily grind of combat patrols transforms good men into cold-blooded killers and weak ones into bitter memories. At the bleeding edge of space, Mark learns the true cost of war as he fights for his life, his platoon mates, and his humanity.

In the 35th century, war has evolved.

Man hasn't.

If you haven’t ever served you might not get it

While the story is set in the future with modern weapons and technology, It still comes down to the men and women you serve and how you serve them.
We humans are an imperfect

Action backed!

This book is action packed! My anxiety was through the roof in some of the fight scenes not knowing how Reiser and his crew would make it out. Aslesen delivers again on vivid description, giving you a front row seat in the action. Not having a military background myself ,it was eye opening to think about what our brave men and women face in battle. This book made me think even more highly of the sacrifices they and their families make. Thank you to all who have served, past, present and future!

Great Military Scifi

Solid story for those that like grit, gore, and mature content. While nothing new, the story, world, and characters kept my interest easily. The tone is kind of a downer, but that just makes me want the next book.

The narrator did a great job and is perfect for this genre of story.

Looking forward to seeing where this goes

It was a tad hard to keep up / get invested with the various perspectives.

Riser of course was well fleshed out and the only one I really felt invested in.

the other characters were interesting but would have liked to spend more time with them.

for the audio book would have been nice to have the narrator identify each perspective before beginning reading.

No one is safe in the book which is fair. It is war after all. don't want to spoil anything, But at a certain point it becomes well... who isn't going to die if you know what I mean...

looking forward to the next book. worth the credit for me. and has me hunting for more like it.

came to this book off listening to Armor.

the narrator is awesome on this and on Armor same guy. (He has several different voices and tonalities, also does a good job with a variety of accents giving the characters flavor.)

for any of my 1.5x and 2x listeners, I found the narrator's cadence fit best in the 1.3-1.5 range. faster it would become hard to clearly follow for me due to the various accents and tonalities he employs.

Good read but can't bare listening to the narrator

This book would be a great read. But I had to turn it off after a few hours. I just couldn't be past all of the ridiculous accents the narrator attempted for each character. Or the fact that he talked like Droopy the entire time. I wish they would redo this book with an actually skilled voice actor.

unremarkable.

Just what the world needs, yet another military sci-fi about somebody signing up for the Marines. Is there anything about this offering that makes it stand out, head and shoulders, above all the other Space Marine sci-fi titles currently on offer? The short answer has to be "no." this fails to qualify for the audio book equivalent of being a page turner (Unless, of course, this is your first ever experience of listening to an audiobook about Space Marines, in which case it might just have the novelty value that is otherwise missing). I'm not even sure that I'm going to keep this in my library, I think the credit could be used productively, elsewhere!
