Publisher's Summary

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Daring Greatly, written and read by Brené Brown.

Every time we are introduced to someone new, try to be creative or start a difficult conversation, we take a risk. We feel uncertain and exposed. We feel vulnerable. Most of us try to fight those feelings - we strive to appear perfect.

In a powerful new vision, Dr. Brené Brown challenges everything we think we know about vulnerability and dispels the widely accepted myth that it's a weakness. She argues that, in truth, vulnerability is strength, and when we shut ourselves off from vulnerability - from revealing our true selves - we distance ourselves from the experiences that bring purpose and meaning to our lives.

Daring Greatly is the culmination of 12 years of groundbreaking social research across every area of our lives including home, relationships, work and parenting. It is an invitation to be courageous, to show up and let ourselves be seen, even when there are no guarantees. This is vulnerability. This is daring greatly.

Finally understand shame!

I loved this book. I've just finished listening to it and I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of my hard copy version, which I intend to use as a reference.

I've learned so much about shame, the impact it has had on my life and best of all, I've learned so much about shame resilience. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

A bit too similar to the authors earlier books

I normally love Brene's work but I just couldn't stick this one out. I really enjoy that she narrates her own work which is why I gave 5 stars for performance, but it felt like I was just listening to one of her earlier books as they all have the same message. A real shame as I really enjoyed her other books.

Would no doubt be enjoyed by someone who is new to the authors work.

Life changing

It took to full two listenings of this audible book to really digest entirely; there is so much to absorb and comprehend. Brene’s narration is natural and very easy to listen to. I will strive to dare greatly from now on!

I used to believe the myths...

This book has really broken the myths for me. Vulnerability is not my long suit, nor did I think I even “did” vulnerability. Your research seems solid and your words made sense Brene Brown. I will use this in my life now.

Confronting, inspiring and compassionate

Brené Brown, thank you for writing and recording your story and the story of so many others. At first I found what you were saying quite confronting as I wrestled with what you were saying against my own ego and shame. It has truly helped me realise so many of my own previously unconscious behaviours that were underpinned by shame. You’ve taught me to be more open with my husband and the children I teach and ultimately be more compassionate with myself, and release the ideals of perfectionism that were affecting me to my core. Thank you!

A great comfort

This book is a great comfort and tool to help me survive going deaf. It has given me words that help explain and understand what I'm dealing with every day in a hearing world in my sudden unwanted isolation a loss of quality of life.

If you're struggling, read this book!

I read this book after it was recommended to me by my boss shortly after breaking down in front of him. This is a really inspiring book to understand how being vulnerable can be positive, and shouldn't be something you're afraid of. Brené narrates the story with great passion.

This hits home!

I absolutely loved Brené Brown reading her book Daring Greatly! Why? Because it spoke directly into my heart and mind giving me the tools to live a braver life. I am no pussy cat by any stretch of the imagination but this book together with Rising Strong has transformed my way of thinking and being (I was going to say acting, but it’s not an act anymore) for the better. As I implement the principles from these books on a day to day basis my life feels richer and I feel like I’m becoming a truer version on myself. Thank God for Brené Brown!

Brilliant

Brilliant analysis of what it is to be vulnerable, and the difficulties we all have in doing so. A book I will continue to revisit.

Loved the Ted Talk , loathed the book

Absolutely loved Brené Brown’s Ted Talk and looked forward to more of the same from the audible book. What a disappointment. I get what she’s trying to say about shame and vulnerability but this just seemed to be lots of spurious facts and figures about how shame is the new Oedipus complex mixed with mundane anecdotes from her life. Combined with Brown’s nasalised twang and the compulsory inclusion of the ‘s’ word at least once in every sentence, I found the book almost unlistenable to. I just had to give up.
If you want to read a book that might really help give you a new perspective on life, give this a miss and try Edith Eger’s ‘The Choice’. Eger’s book is an example of how to write an intelligent and completely engaging psychology self-help book.

moving, thoughtful and read by the author

i only recently discovered Brene Brown but the Roosevelt quote is already on my work and home walls. This is a moving, thoughtful and of course well researched book and the icing on the cake is its read by the author. thoroughly recommended.

Good content but pace of speech lets it down

Insightful and inspiring in places.
One thing I felt from beginning of book was speed at which it was narrated detracted from message. The application of theories in day to day family life provided lovely personal accounts. Particularly touching was story of swimming and Brené’s daughter. Empowering her to be a better human in future - loved that central story, as it was theory put in to action to protect next generation from being weak in their resolve and how to foster courage in face of adversity. I loved the book but I wish it could have been read at a slower pace so messages washed in instead of rushed in.

Game changer!

Loved it! So many GEMs to take away! Gonna have to buy the hard copy now! Very well narrated. Took away a lot of lessons to apply. Jumped onto the Brené Brown ship late but glad I'm here!
