Story
Some of the parchment pages were the color of cream, thick and substantial, made to last many, many lifetimes. Other pages were thin and desiccated, positively yellow from age, and crackled alarmingly as Van Richten turned them over. There were no ornate illuminations, no fussy borders, only lines of plain text in hard black ink. The flowing handwriting was a bit difficult to follow at first; the writer's style of calligraphy had not been in common use for 300 years. No table of contents, but from the dates it looked to be some kind of history.

Story
Once upon a time, in the magical land of San Francisco, there lived a not-so-ordinary girl named Laurel Pettigrew. She was supposed to be the Chosen One. The plan was simple: She would vanquish the great evil Tybus in an epic battle. But destiny had other ideas, and Laurel's performance in the whole heroics department was a colossal flop. Now, instead of being a legendary hero, Laurel's the resident pariah of the magic realm. And what’s worse, the dark wizard Tybus swooped in, took over the realm, and forced all supernatural creatures to live under his tyrannical rule.

Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap out of the audio, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse.

Publisher's Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
Delve into the mind of Critical Role's most charming villain in this original novel that chronicles Lucien's early life and his fateful meeting with the Mighty Nein.
Lucien has always been able to spin a bad situation to his advantage. From his childhood on the dangerous streets of Shadycreek Run to his years living off the grid and learning blood magic from the Claret Orders, the charismatic blood hunter will find a way to get the upper hand.
When Lucien is on a job in the frozen wastelands of Eiselcross with his fellow mercenaries, a rough-and-tumble crew called the Tombtakers, fate leads him to a mysterious journal in the ruins of an ancient city. The book speaks of the Somnovem, nine beings who can grant Lucien power beyond imagining—if he is able to find them and free them from captivity.
Intrigued by this opportunity, Lucien pores over the journal—but the more he reads, the stranger things become. The nine whisper to him in dreams and waking visions. Time slips away, along with Lucien's grasp on reality. And tattoos of red eyes begin appearing on his skin....
With the ability to reshape the world within his grasp, Lucien ignores all warning signs. He has always bent fortune to his will, and nothing—not even death—will stop him now.
Written by New York Times bestselling author Madeleine Roux, Critical Role: The Mighty Nein-The Nine Eyes of Lucien explores the meteoric rise and fall of one of Critical Role's most notorious and tragic figures.

Best audiobook read out there
Excellent narration followed by a fantastic fantasy tale of greed and ambition. I enjoyed the story and after watching two seasons of Vox Machina I wanted more storytelling in this universe. This is my first introduction to Lucien and I enjoyed it.

Long May He Reign
Enjoyed it a lot, Lucien’s history and the rest of the tomb takers and how things happened on the other side of the M9’s story.
Might have just been my speakers but sometimes the audio from Beau and Caleb came out a bit weird- tinny, almost? Just an observation.

An enrapturing expansion on the M9
What incredible writing, narration, and acting. It creates such an additional depth to Molly and the final arc of Critical Role campaign 2, it enhances it and enhances itself through its touchstones. A beautiful and fulfilling exploration of the backstory of a fallen player character, beautifully read by Robbie and the cast of CR. Amazing. On to the next one!

hard to follow
Unfortunately I'm not familiar with campaign 2 and this book did not hold up on its own in isolation of the campaign.
Robbie did a great job narrating as usual.

Struggles to stand up on it's own
Excellently narrated with nice cameos from the Critical Role team, however the story simply doesn't hold up on it's own without Critical Role Campaign 2 insight. Character development isn't well defined and the story arc somewhat forced.
If you're a fan of Critical Role you'll enjoy this book (as did I), however I wouldn't recommend outside the critter community.
