When Chicago’s PI / Wizard Harry Dresden made a Faustian pact with Mab, Queen of the Faerie Winter Court, to become her Winter Knight to save his daughter, he always knew he would pay a steep price—he is now Mab’s creature, her deadly weapon, and he has an immediate target on painted his back by the rest of the bloodthirsty Winter Court. While dodging repeated attempts on his life and adjusting to no longer being a ghost, Harry discovers a plot to undo Demon Reach, the ancient island on Lake Michigan that houses great and powerful evil. It’s a literally a race against time and against many high-powered foes, and Harry will need all the help he can get!

Phew, this busy magical action-adventure had so much action, so many twists and turns, with operatic levels of laugher and sorrow, I just couldn’t put it down! As well as creating some much loved characters, Jim Butcher has also crafted a complex urban fantasy world with epic storylines, and a lot of the gut punches have landed hard in these last few books. I began this series thinking it would just be mildly amusing magical detective cases, but the stakes have gotten higher and higher and Harry is dragged from pillar to post by some incredibly powerful creatures. Only his determination, ingenuity and training help him emerge battered, bruised but triumphant (so far) and I’m here for the entertaining long haul! 🎧 US actor Jim Marsters is such a superb and versatile audio narrator, from tiny, squeaky fairy voices to thundering demons, he has a vast range!!

This series just gets more and more epic!

Absolutely loved this Dresden Files. The story is fast paced and development of all the characters other than Harry keeps your turning the pages. The unexpected twist at the end just makes me want to read the next book NOW!!!

Well, after the (IMO) disappointing “Ghost Stories”, Jim is back in top form with “Cold Days”. Plenty of humour and many hints dropped of epic challenges to come.

This book is back up there with those between 4-12.

James Marsters is, as always, excellent as our narrator, veering much closer to voice actor with his performance.
