Publisher's Summary

Raised in the small town of Wushan, Linley is a scion of the Baruch clan, the clan of the once-legendary Dragonblood Warriors. Their fame once shook the world, but the clan is now so decrepit that even the heirlooms of the clan have been sold off. Their prospects seem dire...and yet, perhaps some power still remains within the veins of the clan. Dragons do not easily die, and neither do the dragonblooded.

Come witness a new legend in the making. The legend of Linley Baruch.

This is the first of eight fantasy novels comprising the translation of the seminal 'Coiling Dragon Saga' by famous Chinese author Wo Chi Xi Hong Shi, originally hosted on www.wuxiaworld.com. This authorized translation was created by Ren Woxing and published by Wuxiaworld Limited.

Ruined the mood

Honestly the narrator annoys me I don't know if it's her nassaly voice, or her annoying attempts to make sounds she ruined the vibe an not only that what does she have to do after recording that's so important because I don't understand why she's rushing every sentence god like let me imagine the scene the book isn't even available for purchase so this is my only option an she's ruined that .

A nice bit of nostalgia.

I followed Rens translation of CD and remember enjoying the daily updates. I must say that he did a fantastic job in bringing the story to an audiobook format. Being busy Irl I don't quite have the time to binge read like I used to but I greatly enjoyed listening through the story again. to show my thanks for all the hard work wuxiaworld has done over the years ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ here's five stars. The story is fantastic btw.

Great story bad narration

The story is a classic xanxia novel that defines the genre. I have been a fan of this series since wren started translating it in Wuxiaworld and was ecstatic when it was announced to be on audio book. However, why a narrator who talks so fast that she is understandable and almost normal on the x0.75 speed option, was chosen to be the narrator, I do not know. I really hope they change up the narrator for the next seven books.

Please change the narrator

I love these books. But the audible book narrator is horrible. She speeds through the book trying to finish it as fast as she can. Majority of the characters are male and it’s just weird. No emotion no different voices for any characters. The book is too good for the narrator to be this bad. I’ve read the series more than 3-4 times. Love the books. There’s a lot of good narrators out their. Nick podel or Jeff hays (always top choices) sorry if I misspelled the names. Please don’t stick with this narrator for the next books!

Good book, narration is just plain bad

The 1st book has good character building and sets a good starting pace for the rest of the series. As far as universe building goes, it's more detailed than most wuxia novels albeit repetitive but such is the pattern for these types of stories which is not necessarily bad. The narration however is lacking...this reminds me of someone who reads a book to a child before bed... Minus the creativity and the characterization of the individuals in the story. The narrator speeds up , skips syllables, mummbles , barely any differentiation on the characters and has forced intonation ...I don't hear emotion. The narrator is detached from the story. The book, the whole bloody series deserves better. I bought the book and the audible to show my appreciation and support to the author and the translator ...I however, will not support the next audiobooks if this is what is being offered. This is plain laziness! No effort! You will never increase your cultivation this way! Disrespect to the Sect! The ancestors are weeping in their graves! Shame!

Repetitive wording; Sub-par Narrator

The Narrator needs some practice as there is a lot of breathing into the mic, weird cut offs, unclear pronunciation, and rather quick speaking which at times can be hard to keep up with. Story: The overall story was good for what type this is. The main character is op and doesn't really struggle. There are an incredible amount of coincidences to the point it gets a bit grating. The translation is not so good. There is an incredible amount of repetition for details that are incredibly obvious. Taking the word genius out of this would reduce its narration time by half.

disappointed

It is a struggle to lison to this reading, should not have been posted as is. When your the readers voice overpowers the book you are reading it makes for a poor experience. Instead of the immersen I've found so many times in this great series I only found myself disappointed.

Terrible lifeless narration

The story is good however you can tell it was translated and has odd word choices from time to time. However which truly brings it down it’s the narrator who only has one voice for everyone.

The Worst Narration

I'm a Audible fan boy. This is the worst narration I had the misfortune of encountering. How this narration was publish, I have no idea. It simply killed the story for me.

The Story is good. The narrator.... sigh

So I’ve read this entire series of 8 books. I own them and have very much enjoyed them as a good example of Wuxia. 5 stars for the story. The narrator needs some practice and would benefit from listening to other audiobooks to understand that pauses are needed between sentences, character changes, paragraphs, multiple views and needs to not chew and bite off so many prepositions and verbs. Could also do with knowing the correct pronunciation of certain words. She gets better as we progress further into the story but not much. I will buy the next 7 audiobooks but I earnestly entreat Wuxiaworld & co to either train the current narrator or get someone else who understands how to pace and narrate audiobooks.

A good story, with a few issues

It’s good, I recommend it, but you should know a few things first. This is a wuxia story, which means it’s a translation of a Chinese web novel. These stories tend to focus on the main character gaining strength / chi powers at an unprecedented rate. Because it’s a translation, you’re going to encounter some “odd” writing styles (from a western perspective) that are a result of societal context that (I assume) makes a lot more sense if you’re Chinese (such as the main character being referred to as “3rd bro” for a lot of the scenes. This takes a bit of getting used to. Then there’s the narration. I think the narrator has a lot of heart, but has a lot of room for improvement. I’d like to see them (singular) return for the second book, but after some elocution lessons, as they have a tendency to rush and mumble certain words. If you like the general setting and themes, then give this book a shot, I think it’s worth it :-) To Esther Merriken: I think you need to slow down and take the time to say the words at a comfortable pace. Also, try listening to Travis Baldree, Michael Kramer, Kate Reading, John Lee, Nick Podehl, Andrea Parsneau, Finty Williams, and Sean Runnette. Notice how they express themselves in different scenes and see if there’s anything you could adapt to your style / voice. I believe in you!

Spoiled by poor narration

The story is a simplistic but entertaining Wuxia tale, with the main character combining unbelievable luck with hard work to achieve superhuman abilities. (3.5/5) The narration is poorly paced, with frequent mispronunciation. For everyone who decides to persist with the story, I suggest you adjust the playback speed to 0.75 , which greatly helps with the pacing. The recording quality improved part way through the story, with what sounded like a new microphone. (2/5) The book was reasonably long, especially at the reduced play speed, making it good value for money. (5/5) Combining the scores for each category this gives an overall score of 3
