A refreshing discussion about Burnout for women.

I thought l would listen to this book as a refresher on how to manage my long term anxiety, stress and health. Instead l was challenged with new (to me) strategies, perspectives and issues that will help me approach my issues from a new perspective.
for me, the stories they weave throughout the book cement the ideas they are presenting and provide the often missing link about HOW l can apply this thinking of action into my life TODAY.
Am about to re-listen to the book.

This book is a must read for all women, people conforming to female social norms, professionals in caring industries: doctors, nurses, psychologists, etc. I cannot recommend this book enough. It has already changed my life.

Life-changing

My therapist recommended this book to me when I was down and out, emotionally, mentally and physically exhausted.
Since listening to the audio book I have already started implementing some of the strategies (mainly around boundary setting) and am already seeing positive results!
I absolutely loved the way that this book is not only written, but narrated in such a calm and soothing manner. It felt like I was getting guidance, compassion and reassurance from two maternalistic warriors, who have seen and done it all and could empathise with my pain.
My only critique, would be the overly gendered language that was used. I could see NB, gender queer/questioning persons also identifying with the principals in this book. Perhaps the use of gender neutral pronouns might foster a better sense of inclusion.
Otherwise, I love love love this book! I’m about to start listening to it again! Thank you Emily and Amelia for this wonderful gift.

A beautiful, brilliantly researched book foe women

I heard their podcast on Dare to Lead with Brène Brown and got hooked to the book. It’s a scientific narration that tells what ails us Human Givers , a distinct category from human beings. We probably know what is not right but they put words, scientific research and and real life examples to help find the truth. Not preachy, not self helpish but more like a conversation with self. I recommend to every woman who feels all she’s done is being a “giver”.

This isnt just a book for women!

I LOVED this book and having both authors narrate was fantastic. So many valuable learnings, key takeaways for me were how to recognise and complete the stress cycle (getting those 20 second hugs in regularly now!!), how to SMASH the patriarchy, and how to let go of being a human giver and the expectation that I need to do everything for everyone. I so enjoyed the emphasis in this book on the importance of support and connection, we are not meant to do things on our own. Buy this book, it will enrich your view of life!

Boring

I thought this book would be about self care, however most of it seems to make the assumption that women are somehow taken advantage off and don’t know how to look after themselves. If you want to listen to a sexist, feminist wine about how life is so tough for women then this book is for you. As a strong independent female I did not align with it at all and found it very boring.

LOVED this book

Absolutely loved this book and read it in 2 days. For someone who suffered from years of stress and ended up burnout to the point where it has affected me in all aspects of my life, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I wish I had read this 4- 5 years earlier.

One of the best books I've read in 2019

It's not just for women. It's the book I wish I'd had years ago. Each chapter is so relevant and accessible I feel that this could so easily be adapted to be a course that I'd happily spend the rest of my life teaching/showing people. Congratulations to Emily and Amelia for writing one of the most sensible and inspiring 'self-help' books I've ever read and I've read so many! I've recommended it to my friends and two more copies are arriving today for me to give as gifts this Christmas to my favourite people.

Warm, practical and inspiring


A few months ago, a friend sent me a link to Brené Brown’s “Unlocking Us” podcast, on which these sisters featured, talking about the concept of Burnout. She sent it, knowing how burnt out I was. I identified with what they were discussing, hard, and subsequently bought this audiobook. I listened to it over a course of several weeks, generally as I was cleaning the kitchen or cooking. I am in the process of recommending it to pretty much every woman I know, and several men too.

This audiobook talks about the simply exhausting nature of being a woman existing at this point in history. From families to careers to relationships, they help put our circumstances into perspective and offer practical advice, backed up with science, on how to deal with things. Their tone of voice is kind without being too soft, matter-of-fact without being cold. They provide examples of scenarios that feel familiar and relatable, then talk through the process in resolving some of the tensions in these scenarios.

This book has given me a greater understanding on how I sometimes think, feel, and act the way I do - and I have already started to reap the benefits of the practical advice they offer. The broader political and societal context they provide throughout was something I found particularly rich and helpful, too (and is also what inspired me to share with the men in my life, who I think would benefit from this perspective).

Could not recommend this highly enough to any woman out there who spends her time wondering “when do I get to take a break?”. Thank you so much, Emily and Amelia 💕

Thought provoking and insightful

Very insightful and thought provoking. Even if you, like me, have listened to a long list of self-help books, this one stands out from the crowd, and makes you not only listen, and feel, but also act, immediately, on what Emily and Amelia explains and recommends. Any woman suffering from a feeling of inferiority should read/listen to this book!

Essential for all women everywhere

This book is a game changer for me. I don't know what it doesn't cover about making it possible to be joyful whilst embracing and acknowledging all the tough bits in life. I feel like I really know what to do now, the first steps are clear and yet, all the pressure is off to perform in any way. This is the ideal way to start making a difference for the better for myself. This book has given me huge hope.

Essential, actually

I cried twice just in the first chapter, with relief and understanding and a release of grief 😳 I think most women, at least, should read this book. Men will benefit too, though maybe in different ways (but maybe not). Do yourself a favour and get it today. 🤷‍♀️ (also, they do a good job with inclusivity)

Great performance an entertaining listen
