Publisher's Summary

Random House presents the audiobook edition of Burnout by Amelia Nagoski and Emily Nagoski, read by Emily Nagoski.

This groundbreaking book explains why women experience burnout differently from men - and provides a simple, science-based plan to help women minimize stress, manage emotions and live a more joyful life.

The gap between what it's really like to be a woman and what people expect women to be is a primary cause of burnout, because we exhaust ourselves trying to close the space between the two. How can you 'love your body' when everything around you tells you you're inadequate? How do you 'lean in' at work when you're already giving 110 percent and aren't recognized for it? How can you live happily and healthily in a world that is constantly telling you you're too fat, too needy, too noisy and too selfish? Sisters Emily Nagoski, PhD, the best-selling author of Come as You Are, and Amelia Nagoski, DMA, are here to help end the cycle of overwhelm and exhaustion and confront the obstacles that stand between women and well-being.

With insights from the latest science, prescriptive advice and helpful worksheets and exercises, Burnout reveals:

  • What you can do to complete the biological stress cycle - and return your body to a state of relaxation.
  • How to manage the 'monitor' in your brain that regulates the emotion of frustration.
  • How the Bikini Industrial Complex makes it difficult for women to love their bodies - and how to fight back.
  • Why rest, human connection, and befriending your inner critic are key to recovering from and preventing burnout.

Eye-opening, compassionate and optimistic, Burnout will completely transform the way we think about and manage stress, empowering women to thrive under pressure and enjoy meaningful yet balanced lives. All women will find something transformative in these pages - and be empowered to create positive and lasting change.

Explains everything!

This will be a book I listen to a number of time, its had a profound affect on how I think about things. So many points through the book I had to stop, breathe, and absorb the information as it was all so relevant. I've had a tough journey with my mental health for most of my life, and this is the first time I've found tools that make sense in how I can sustain a life of satisfaction and joy!

Not bad

The story has good underlying messages and is supported with well-researched evidence. I personally found the language and metaphors hokey and at times strayed too far from the key message (for me). But I can see how these aspects would really resonate with other readers. Would I recommend this book to others? Sure, but I’d be mindful that they would appreciate this style of writing.

good

I couldn't stand the readers "ugh" after saying key words. I know they are trying to add emotion to the story but it isn't for me. When delivering key messages the music in the background is annoying but that is my personal preference. The book overall is good and I would recommend it.

A must read for women

Practical solutions to a modern problem for women from every walk of life. The information is interesting even if the solutions are not implemented by the listener!

Life changing

I thought it was in my head. I thought I was imagining it. Turns out women are slowly killing ourselves and our bodies are trying to tell us and we are not listening. This book changed my life. I bought it for everyone and haven’t stopped talking about it anyone who would listen. The data is frightening and compelling. I deep dived into everything the author ever said and wrote and believe EN is my new BFF.

a must read for all women

Emily and Amelia are so clever and understanding of the plight of busy women everywhere. Even better that they narrate this from their heart the way it was intended.

This isnt just a book for women!

I LOVED this book and having both authors narrate was fantastic. So many valuable learnings, key takeaways for me were how to recognise and complete the stress cycle (getting those 20 second hugs in regularly now!!), how to SMASH the patriarchy, and how to let go of being a human giver and the expectation that I need to do everything for everyone. I so enjoyed the emphasis in this book on the importance of support and connection, we are not meant to do things on our own. Buy this book, it will enrich your view of life!

LOVED this book

Absolutely loved this book and read it in 2 days. For someone who suffered from years of stress and ended up burnout to the point where it has affected me in all aspects of my life, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I wish I had read this 4- 5 years earlier.

Boring

I thought this book would be about self care, however most of it seems to make the assumption that women are somehow taken advantage off and don’t know how to look after themselves. If you want to listen to a sexist, feminist wine about how life is so tough for women then this book is for you. As a strong independent female I did not align with it at all and found it very boring.

One of the best books I've read in 2019

It's not just for women. It's the book I wish I'd had years ago. Each chapter is so relevant and accessible I feel that this could so easily be adapted to be a course that I'd happily spend the rest of my life teaching/showing people. Congratulations to Emily and Amelia for writing one of the most sensible and inspiring 'self-help' books I've ever read and I've read so many! I've recommended it to my friends and two more copies are arriving today for me to give as gifts this Christmas to my favourite people.

A must read for all modern women

Let me just say how much I LOVE the Nagoski sisters! Having been recommended my book by my counsellor and loving it, I cannot stop telling people about it. Very soon you will be the same. How else will all our fellow sisters know the truth about human-giver syndrome and the patriarchy (ugh!). The references are all relevant and not excessively American-ised. There are strong women in the examples that are relatable and I cannot praise the Nagoski sisters highly enough for sharing these stories, research and info with us. It makes everything that we should know about our bodies so easy to understand. It helps to appreciate and start to push back against the trap all modern women fall into. In short, this book has helped me. And it can help you!

fantastic

I have listened and read a number of self help books but I think this one might be my favourite. Informative, funny, accessible... just wonderful. No negatives from me, give it a read or a listen. I will definitely be reading for a second time :)
