Summary
Nell Tasker restores Victorian glass plate negatives for a living, and she is good at exposing ghost photographs for what they are: double exposures, scratched emulsion, a trick of the light.
Then she is hired to save a box of photographs dredged from the mill race of Brinemere, a crumbling tide mill on the Norfolk salt marshes. The plates date from 1893, the year of the great November gale, when the miller's family drowned beside the water. Now a London designer is turning the old mill and its house into a holiday retreat, and she wants those pictures on the walls by Christmas.
Nell moves into the attic room above the marsh, with the tide ticking in the dark, and starts cleaning the plates one by one. After every plate she finishes, something in the house quietly puts itself back the way it looked in that picture. A table. A door. A clock in the hall. Always at high tide, never while anyone is watching. And in every negative, a small figure stands a little closer to the lens.
The village of Saltingham has its own legend about that night, polished by a hundred and thirty years of retelling. Nell knows how to spot a fake. She is beginning to fear that this house is not faking anything.
A slow-burning gothic horror novel of sea fog, winter geese and rising water. For listeners who love a classic English ghost story, a haunted house that keeps its secrets until the tide turns, and a Victorian mystery written in glass and silver.
